北村 想
1952年、滋賀県生まれ。名古屋で劇団「彗星’86」を結成し、戯曲を書き始める。84年、『十一人の少年』で第二十八回岸田戯曲賞を受賞、89年、『雪をわたって…第二稿・月のあかるさ』で第二十四回紀伊國屋演劇賞を受賞する(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

もうかなり前にPART-Iをハヤカワ文庫版で読み、ようやく今回PART-II（原題『怪人二十面相･伝 青銅の魔人』）への邂逅を果たし、読み終えた。島谷サヨや遠藤幸子（本編では、太宰治の情婦である山崎トミエとして登場）らのその後の運命をも描きつつ、遠藤平吉の物語は深い余韻を保ちながらその幕を下ろす。（江戸川乱歩の少年探偵団シリーズが、懐かしい表紙絵や挿画とともにポプラ社文庫版として出始めているので、読み返したくなった。なお、映画『K-20』の内容は本作とは全く異なりますので、一応購入に際しては注意が必要かと思われます。）

　本書は昨年公開(08・12・20)され、話題となった映画『K-20 怪人二十面相・伝』(監督：佐藤嗣麻子、主演：金城武)の原作本である。大正から昭和期にかけて活躍され、今日でも数多くのクリエイターに影響を与え続けるミステリー作家の偉大なる先人・江戸川乱歩先生の代表作を劇作家の北村想氏が名探偵・明智小五郎のライバルである怪人二十面相の人物像に焦点を当て、新たに脚色して作られた“二十面相”の物語として描かれている。

　サーカスの天才・武井丈吉が扮した怪人二十面相が国立博物館での明智率いる警官隊との攻防において逃走を図ろうとした気球の大爆発で生死不明となり、十年の歳月が過ぎた。かつてサーカスで丈吉の愛弟子であった遠藤平吉が行方知れずとなっている師匠の注目を引くために、ひそかに二代目二十面相となることを誓っていた矢先に突如として現れた明智小五郎。死期が近いことがうかがい知れた明智は二十面相が残した数冊のノートを平吉に差し出す。二十面相との因縁の対決を怪人二十面相を引き継ぐ平吉と二代目・明智小五郎を襲名した小林少年に託した事で世間が注目する両者の間に再び火蓋が切って落とされる。

　登場人物も丈吉の後を引き継ぎ、怪人二十面相を名乗る主人公・平吉、平吉の養女・葉子、同じ泥棒長屋の隣人で盗人の先輩である暗闇の源治、葉子の知り合いでノガミの孤児の大将・戌江新介、含笑寺の謎の住職・雲海、怪人二十面相が狙う『皇帝の夜光の時計』の持ち主である貿易会社社長・手塚龍之助、平吉同様亡き先代の後を襲名した小林少年こと二代目・明智小五郎など個性豊かな面々が登場し、さらには実在の人物・太宰治や驚くべきあの人も登場して物語を盛り上げる。

　前作に引き続き、面白く練られており、本来主人公で正義の人であるはずの明智小五郎(二代目)が狡猾な“悪”の人間に描かれているのも本書の特徴である。
