　前評判（映画も含めて）につられて読んでみました。ストーリーとしては，ロマンティックで惹かれるものがありましたが，文章がつたない。これは林真理子の訳の未熟さによるものか，原作の文章がやはり作者同様幼いのか，正直言ってがっかりしました。言い回しの不自然さや感情的で真意が測りにくい会話，ユーモアのセンスが伝わってこない・・・など。特に，ホリーと親友たちの会話からは，友情の深さや思いやりが感じられません。原作を読んでみないと，この作品のよさはわからないようです。

文庫にしてはやや厚く、一見時代物を読んでいるように見えます。でも章立てのデザインも可愛らしく、映画を見た私には、カットの写真も親近感が沸いてよかったです。
林さんご自信の文章は、非常にキレがあり好きですが、訳は残念です。女性の作家独特の行間にある情感が台無しでした。回りくどい言い回しや、言葉の使い方ががさつな感じがしています。
ホリーが悲しみのフィルターに、一度思いをくぐらせて言葉を発するまでの間が表現しきれていない感じがします。また時間とともに変化する、ホリーの心象をもう少し大事に表現して欲しかったと思います。
しかし、Ｃ・アハーンの小説は、輝いています。女性本来のやさしさや悲しみ、憤りを見事に描いています。読んだ後心の平穏が訪れるのも私だけではないと思います。
全ての年代の恋人・ご夫婦に是非読んでいただきたいものです。

夫を亡くし悲嘆に暮れているホリーに、夫からの手紙が実家の方に届いています。
そこには、３月から１２月に至るメッセージが１０通ついています。
その毎月開けるように指定された亡き夫からのメッセージは、彼女の「１０戒」として、その後の彼女を導いてゆきます。

それほどまでに悲嘆に暮れる彼女を予期して死んでいった夫がいたと言うことは、この二人の関係がいかに深い絆に結ばれたものであったかが解ります。
その「１０戒」に従って次第に立ち直ってゆく主人公は、そのメッセージが無くなった時、平常の生活が出来る様に立ち直っているでしょうか。

物語の設定、ストーリーの展開は、実に魅力的で読ませます。
一人の女性とそれを助ける友達や家族。
なかなか楽しめる小説です。

ただ、「小説」の出来映えという点では、やや突っ込みたくなるところもあります。
その辺りは、「訳者あとがき」で林真理子氏の指摘があります。
