「親鸞は私にとって、いまでも謎の思想家である」から始まる。「巨大な謎をもつ人間」とも言う。ヘーゲルのような哲学者的思弁をもつと同時に「深い心の闇」を光に変える信仰の人であったとみる。絶望の果てに救済を唱えるからだ。その過程においては聖徳太子崇拝と現世肯定（煩悩の直中）に生きた人である。
著者は「歎異抄」を〈わが心の恋人〉 と見て、多くの人を魅了するのは「勇気づけられ、いつしか心が癒される」不思議さがあるからだ。自らも篤い信仰心をもち、人は誰しも救われるのだという揺るぎない信念に魅了されるのである。親鸞の信仰はもともと善悪を超越したところにあった。人間の善悪と言っても、もともと善と悪とが定まっているわけではなく、何らかの〈業因〉によって殺したり殺さなかったりする、特に親鸞の時代は血腥い戦乱の時代であれば、なおさらであったろう。宗教の道徳化の求められた時代、「歎異抄」という〈強烈な毒〉を含んだこのすばらしい宗教書は、長らく秘匿せざるをえなかった。
　切れ味鋭い梅原論は健在であるが、「まだわからいところが多い」と言われるところの再説を期待してやまない。

何一つ理解不能なことばかりの中で、他力本願という言葉に強い魅力を感じられるようになったこと、ああ人間は一人で生きていけないんだからこそ、他力本願なんだとしみじみ感じられるようになった事は、ある意味で人生を変えた一冊といえます。たにんしょうの現代語訳がわかりやすく書かれているので、苦痛なく、読めました
