「妖怪」＝「霊」という結論に辿り着いた(っぽい)水木氏のコラム集。
史実に基づく「実際にあった」部分の半分と、それに基づく「憶測と創作」が半分。
(氏の書籍は大半がそんな感じですが)
ので、水木氏のファン以外の方にはあまりお薦めできません。
コラムとしては考察豊かで面白い内容ですが、資料としてはいまいち。

　1995年に学習研究社から出た単行本の文庫化。文庫化に当たり、上下巻に分けられ、内容も50音順に整理されている。
　上巻には青鷺火から三味長老までの63点が収められている。
　本書で取り上げられているのは、妖怪の中でも「憑き物」と呼ばれる一群である。犬神や餓鬼憑きなど、憑き物は人間の中に入り込んで狂わせたり、悪影響を与えるものをいう。つまり、憑き物は目に見えないことが多い。それを絵にするのだから大変である。ぼんやりして迫力がいまいちなのも、責められないだろう。
　もともと単行本だったものを文庫化しているため、絵が見開きになってしまっている。中央が切れてしまうから、ちょっと見にくい。
　単行本のがおすすめ。
