下中彌三郎氏が本書の「序」にパール博士の判決文の内容と博士の意志を要約して記しています。
「日本が戦争をはじめざるを得なかったのは、インドシナからシナへとなだれ込んだ西半球の侵略が、日本人八千万人の生存をあやうくするまでにのしかかってきて、日本が生きるためにそうせざるを得なかった。それは、日本人のこらずの意志であった。軍人や政治家は、国民意志を行動にうつしたまでであった。日本に、日本人に罪はない。」
実際に本書を読む限り、パール博士の発言や行動から、東京裁判に関する氏の判断は明らかに「日本無罪論」であったことがわかります。

また当時、原爆が生み出され、しかも簡単に使用されてしまったことで、「核戦争による人類の絶滅」に対する恐怖が現在以上にリアルであったことが本書を読むことで理解できます。
「平和をつらぬくためには、尊い血が流されなくてはならないだろう。しかし、肉体は亡ぼされても、魂を奪うことはできない。剣によって栄える国は剣によって亡びる。平和の魂だけが神の心であり、永生の魂である。どうせ戦いによって死ぬ命なら、われわれは平和のために死のうではないか」
戦後63年経ち、平和主義発祥の地のインドですら核を保有している今日、この氏の言葉は多くの人に空虚に響くかもしれません。しかし、平和を希求することは命がけであるという意味においては、現在のチベットやウィグルの状況を見ても明らかです。現在にも通じる部分があると思います。また、私たち日本人が「戦争をしない」「平和を守る」ということを、どこまで真剣に考えているか省みる必要もあると思いました。

近現代史を学ぶ上で本書は重要な文献です。世代を超えて読み継いでもらいたい本です。復刊されて本当に良かったと思います。

今の時代からみるとさすがに内容の無理さは否めない部分はありますが
パール判事を語るには欠かせないであろう本書
最近、自称平和主義な人たちの癒し本として
パールは東京裁判を全否定はしていない、
などの主張をした著書もあるようですが
その我田引水的な手法の一部がこの復刊によって明らかになったことも評価できます
パール判決書は相当に膨大ではありますが、
こちらについても、しっかりと真実が広まってゆくことを願っています
しかし絶対平和主義者・パール博士の厳しい言葉は
やはり日本の「癒し系平和主義者」には表面的にしか響かないのでしょうか？

無理はないのかもしれない。
ただ、当時の感覚だからこそ現代でありがちなその時の感覚でもって、意図をねじ曲げようとする勢力を排除すべく役に立っているのかも知れない。
パール判事の考えがそこでも少なくとも汲み取れる事だろう。
