加島 祥造
1923年、東京・神田に生まれる。早稲田大学英文科卒、カリフォルニア州クレアモント大学院留学。信州大、横浜国大、青山学院女子短大に勤め、フォークナー、トウェインをはじめ、数多くの翻訳・著作を手がける。1993年「老子」に出会い、英語からの自由な翻訳を試みた『タオ ヒア・ナウ』(PARCO出版)を出版、全訳を収めた『タオ―老子』(筑摩書房)とともにロングセラーとなっている。現在は、信州・伊那谷に独居し、詩作、著作のほか、墨彩画の制作をおこなっている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

いまあるものに感謝すること
すでにある当たり前の出来事がどれほど素晴らしいかを
知ることだ

といわれたような気がします

孔子の「儒教」がプラス思考の教えだとすれば、老子の言っていることは
「無理しなくていいじゃないか。マイナス思考でもいいじゃないか」
ということだと思います。
著者の老子の本は、これまで何冊か読んできました。
私は以前「うつ」になり、そのときに勧められて読んだのが
著者の老子の本だったのです。

うつは、頑張りたくても頑張れなくなる病気です。
本人は何とか頑張ろうとする。無理をしようとする。
だからなかなか治りません。
けれども加島さんの本を読んでいると、
そんなに無理をしなくていいんだよ、充分じゃないか……
そう言われているような気になります。

本書も基本的には老子の考え方をまとめたものですが、
すでに「加島版・老子」といえるほど、醸成されている気がします。
しんどいとき、不安なとき、焦っているとき、
私にとってこの本は安定剤のような効果を発揮してくれました。
何かを求める、欲する意欲や上昇志向、プラス思考は大切なことではあります。
しかし、それだけでは疲れ切ってしまう。
この本はそういうときの処方箋かもしれません。

物や情報があふれた時代に生きる私達は
知らず知らず「もっとたくさん」「もっと早く」「もっともっと！」
そんなふうに自分も他人も急かし急かされて生きている
それは普段特別に意識したこともない当たり前になっている
それが生きるエネルギーだとさえ信じているふしがある

ときにユーモアさえ感じられるようなおおらかな言葉が
立ち止まって自分の内面と静かに向き合うことを
こわくないんだよ、大丈夫なんだよと教えてくれたような気がした

作者は英文から老子の言葉を日本語に訳したすばらしい本を出しているが
この本の言葉はタオの考え方と作者の豊かな人生経験が
長い時間をかけて発酵し、熟成されて生まれたものだと思う

難しい言葉はひとつもない
でも急かされず急かさずじっくりと味わって読みたい一冊です
