『戦中派虫けら日記』『戦中派焼跡日記』『戦中派闇市日記』『戦中派動乱日記』『戦中派復興日記』と続く山田さんの日記です。
本作は昭和26年〜27年12月までの記述が収められています。

この日記にも探偵小説・作家への忌憚のない意見が載っていて、かなりスリリングです。同時に原稿料も載っていて一つの資料になります。

また27年2月8日には
雪1、2寸つもる。朝、高木氏(彬光)来。ともに警視庁見学。瀬戸口氏にあい時事新報の堤松太郎氏に案内してもらって見学。鑑識課長の景山二郎氏に色々話きく・・・・・・。

という記述があります。この景山氏は景山民夫の父君です。
日記を通じて戦中からずーーーーーーーっと本を読みつづけていますが、この頃既に後年の忍法帖や時代小説ための資料を読み込んでいます。
書いていくときりがない。とても興味深い本です

他人の日記を読むというのは罪悪感というか、うしろめたさが伴うものである。
当時の生活風俗を回顧したり、歴史資料的価値もあるのであろうが
本人が生前、承知のもとに発表されたものはともかく、没後に出たとなれば尚更である。
風太郎氏の一ファンとして読むべきか読まざるべきか。
知らずにすめばよかったものを、ハンケチをしぼりてすすり泣くことになるやもしれぬ。
・・・とうとう読んでしまった・・・。
心配は杞憂に終わった。随筆や晩年の語録、対談と全く同じ人である！
甦る山田風太郎！結局、泣ける。

気鋭の推理作家として『妖異金瓶梅』などを書いている頃の山風の日記です。
その舞台裏や世相も注目ですが、夫人となる啓子さんと、もうひとりの女性・孝子さんとの関係も興味深くあります。
山形出身で可憐な啓子さんと、傷ついた水商売の女性である孝子さん。
可憐な姫君系と憎めない妖婦系、二種類の山風ヒロインの造型の基礎があるような気がします。三十路間近でも青春まっさかりの日記です。
