「今の日本には『対話が足りない』」というテーマで、二人の劇作家が対談をくりひろげます。「対話」というのは、単なる「おしゃべり」や「うなずきあい」ではなく、簡単に要約してしまうと「違う文脈の人と、どれだけ歩み寄れるか」といういとなみ、として定義されています。
その定義自体には、まったく賛成です。そして、今の日本には「対話」が足りない、ということについても、賛成です。それについての、さまざまな有益な提言も、この本ではなされています。

でも、他の評者の方も書いておられるとおり、この本じたいは「対話」ではないようです。
井上氏、平田氏、どちらもほとんど同じことを発言していて、お二人の名前を入れ替えても、ぜんぜん気がつかないくらいです。（ついでですが、この商品ページの写真にはありませんが、私が購入したものにはお二人の顔写真を並べた帯が付いていて、その二枚の写真も、入れ替えてもわからないんじゃないかと思ってしまいました。デザイナーのいたずらでしょうか？）

平田氏が「井上さんの戯曲では、突然みんなが歌いだしたりするけど、あんなこと普通の日本人はしませんよね」と言ったり、井上氏が「平田君の舞台で、役者が後ろ向いてしゃべるのは、やっぱりどうかと思うよ」と言ったりして、そこからワクワクする議論が展開したりは、残念ながら、しません。そういうのが、「対話」じゃないかと思うんですが。

もうひとつ。この本は日本語論としては面白いですが、演劇論としては、「戯曲の言葉＝話し言葉」という定義は、せますぎます。演劇には、語りやモノローグといった、話し言葉を超えたスタイルの可能性が、いくらでもあります。その可能性がまったく無視されているのは、残念としかいいようがありません。

　日本語論は数々あるが、話し言葉については議論されることがなかった。それでこの対談が試みられる。井上「自分の大事なメッセージを話し言葉のなかに笑いとともに忍び込ませたいと思っているんです。そんなわけですから、演劇は、大事な素晴らしい装置だと思っています。しかし、演劇という装置は、個人的な視野では動いてくれない」平田「僕たちの仕事は、何か特別な美しい言葉を発明することではなくて、発見することだということでよね」（雅）

　二人の劇作家による対談集。巷にあふれる不快な日本語を快調に斬りまくる二人の好漢の活躍を期待したが期待はずれだった。というよりもタイトルが内容とそぐわない。本書は『劇作作法~ひさしとオリザの対話~』である。

　高校演劇に関わってきた平田が愚痴る。

　全体から見渡すと重要な人物が後半から出てくることが多いんです。それじゃあ作者に都合がよすぎる。だったら、最初から出しておけよと思うんですね。それから、登場人物が何者であるかということを説明するのが高校生には難しいようです。

　軽くヨイショも入れながら井上が受ける。

　たとえば、家族で一緒にいるという設定で「お父さんの仕事何だっけ？」なんていうせりふは存在しないし、父親が「私は銀行員だよ」なんてのもない内部だけでは基本的な情報がなかなか観客に伝えられない。

　そこで内部についての情報量が少ない外部の人を登場させて、内部の情報を手繰り出して観客に知らせる。それも直接的にではなく、なるべく遠いところからというのが平田流の戯曲の基本形ですね。

　先輩と後輩のやりとりは、終始快調である。
