2004年9月に募集を始めた「きらら文学賞」に、遠くニューヨークから原稿が送られてきたのは、募集を始めて2か月後のことでした。どの小説も、原稿の枚数が応募規定に達していなかったため選外となってしまいましたが、あまりにも魅力的で、特例の読み切り連載の形で「きらら」に掲載を始めたのは、'05年4月号からのことでした。今回、そのとき連載した12本に書き下ろしを1本加え、単行本として刊行することとなりました。 〈ネット上で拾ったある読者のブログから抜粋〉20060104／淡いせつなさ　葬式まんじゅう／実は、密かに愛読している作家さんの作品。／なんだかねえ。切なかった。切なすぎて涙が出た。／私は、このかたの文章というか作品世界がとても好きで、まだ出版化されていないようだけど、短篇集が出たら、ぜひ改めて読み直したい。

この短編集には、現実を乗り切る高い才覚・逆境を跳ね除けるバイタリティー・他人から愛される魅力的な容姿や性格等人生の幸福を勝ち取る武器を持ち合わせた人物はどこにも登場しない。
ここに登場するのは、少し惨めで心のどこかに傷や挫折感を抱えながら一井の片隅でひっそり生きている人達ばかりだ。
　誰からも顧みられることの無いような彼ら彼女たちと触れ合った人生の一コマが、ふとしたきっかけで遠い記憶から手繰り寄せられ、いつの間にか鮮やかな輪郭を伴って心の中に出現する。それらの感覚が実に瑞々しい文体でタペストリーのように紡がれている珠玉の作品集。
　同系統の作家として重松清氏が思い浮かぶが、重松作品が弱者の心情により深く寄り添い、美質を探し懸命に救済しようとする強い優しさが全面に出ているのに対し、桐江作品は弱き者達の内面にあえて深入りせずどこかドライな視点で緻密に描写しようする。
ともすれば正常者が異形を見つめるようなやや酷薄な印象を受ける箇所もありそこが当初少し気になっていたが、読み進むうちに、これがこの作家の得がたい長所なのかもしれないと気付く。誰もが自分より弱かったり不幸せだったりする相手に対して持つ、同情や優越感やかすかな侮蔑感を偽善を排し緻密に描き出されることで、読者は弱き者達の心の痛みとそれに対峙する第2者のかすかな傲慢を、同時に体感してしまう。
このような心に残る深い読後感は、凡百の小説では決して味わえない。
新人ながら大変な力のある作家の出現だと思う。

最初は、子供時代の風景がよみがえるようで、懐かしい気持ちで読み始めた。そう言えば、こういう人いたなぁ…と。
読み進めるうちに、どの物語の主人公もはなから夢なんか持っていないかとっくに捨てたか…という平凡な人たちばかりで、誰の視界からもやがて消えて行ってしまうことに気が付いた。そういう“つまらない”人生を丁寧に包みこみ、忘れてしまっていてごめんねと詫びるかのように綴られていく物語たち。胸がチクリと痛み、せつなく悲しく、でも温かい。

小泉今日子さんの書評に惹かれて読みました。終わりに近づくほど読み終えるのがもったいなくてスピードが落ちていき、もっとゆっくり読めばよかったと後悔。まるで映画を見ているような感じで一気に子供時代のさまざまなことが思い出され、鼻の奧がつんとしてきました。クリームソーダ、金平糖のダンス、寒天くらげが特に好きです。ただ、このタイトルと装丁は少し内容と合ってないような気がします。パッと見でポジティブシンキング系のほのぼの童話などを連想して書評を知らなければまず読まなかったのではと思いました。
