40歳を目前にした独身の女性が子どもを持つまでを清冽な文章で綴った作品です。物語の始まりから、主人公と言える二人の女性と取り巻く人々のさまざまな係わり合いが丁寧に描かれ、それぞれが新しいかたちの人と人との関係を表現しています。それは最初、出口のない関係のように感じられます。しかし作者の未来への信頼の反映だと思いますが、物語の後半では新しい家族のかたちとして昇華されていきます。女性が中心の物語だけに男性は手に取る前から敬遠してしまう作品かもしれませんが、読み進むとともに、既婚者であれば自分と家族の関係を見直すきっかけになる、若い独身男性であれば、それこそ自分の生き方を変えてしまうだけの力がある作品だと思います。
また作者がテレビの世界で活躍している方のためか、描写がとても映像的です。特に冒頭の「僕」の独白の部分、それに続く主人公のビデオカメラマン「キョウコ」の仕事中の描写は映画フィルムの一部分を見るようで心地よいリズムがあります。全体を通して視点が意図的に微妙に移動するところなども映像的で、そこにも作品の新しさを感じます。

実はあまり期待せずにこの本を開いたのですが、まず冒頭の子供のモノローグからこの作家の感性に驚かされました。文章が新人？とは思えない程とても上手く、そこに小気味いいユーモアも加味されており、数行で読者のこころを掴まされます。そして、そのまま一気にラストまで・・。
タイトルから内容が男にはキツイかなと心配していましたが、読み終わったときには主人公の女性二人に感動とエールを送りたい気持ちになりました。本当に楽しく＆せつない、素晴らしいエンターテイメント作品に仕上がっていて、久々に、次作を心待ちにさせる作家が出現したっていう感じです。

それに関わる男性達も様々。
どの女性も、自分の中のどこかに似ていて共感してしまう。。
自分の在りかたをふと考えてしまう作品です。
