本書はスキューバでも素潜りでもなく、あくまでシュノーケリングにこだわる著者が、偏愛する海の「変な形の生き物」を見物しに世界の海を訪ねるという、一風変わった紀行文である。

「変な形の生き物」とはタイトルにあるウミウシやイソギンチャクなどである。

とはいえ、妙に読者を引きつける彼独特の文体とギャグで大いに笑わせ、かつ、なごませてくれる。

観察した「変な形の生き物」は著者自身の変なイラストで紹介され、その形についての、彼一流のばかばかしい考察が述べられる。

極上の暇つぶし本である。

地球温暖化により珊瑚の絶滅など、世界の海洋環境か深刻な事態に陥っている今日。
そんな過酷な条件の中で、ユーモラスな著者が美しいサンゴ礁や変な形をした海洋生物を求め各地のダイビングスポットへ。
ダイバー達に馬鹿にされようが、あくまでシュノーケリングを極めようとする著者の姿勢に、
自称プチシュノーケラーの私も改めてその魅力の虜に。深いです・・・。
まったりと自然の形や変わった生き物達のイラストを見ながら、まだ見ぬ不思議生物達との遭遇に期待して。
