以前発刊された6冊組み大辞典のコンパクト版。大辞典の名にふさわしくカラー写真12000枚、50000種収録と言う凄まじい情報量。コンパクト版と言っても一冊でハードカバー1500ページ超はあまりに重厚過ぎるかもしれない。記載に関しても図鑑特有の堅苦しさがなく、見やすいと言うことに重点を置いている。記述は学名などの他に植物の特徴をメインに記載。写真は小さいが的を得ている。一家に一冊一生モノの大辞典だ。本編2冊＋用語集付きの索引一冊。

A-Z園芸植物百科事典と園芸植物大辞典を実際に読んで比べてみました。確かにこちらの方が、一つの品種ごとの説明や類似品種の紹介は多い。しかし情報が古く、あまり流通名では引けない。例えばアジサイでもここ数年人気の「アナベル」では引けないのです。B5版に3分冊になったといっても女性には重く厚く3冊並べると家庭では場所とります。文字も小さく細い。植物の特徴列記の印象で、A-Z園芸植物百科事典の方が、手入れ、育て方や種まきについても触れていて家庭一般ではA-Z園芸植物百科事典のほうが使いやすいと思う。購入の前には図書館などでご自分の最近の好きな植物を引いてみてからのご購入をお薦めします。
