　ボクシング漫画と言えばまず「あしたのジョー」ですが、ひたすら男臭く悲壮感漂うジョーの世界に比べ、「がんばれ元気」はどことなく暖かく、丸みを帯びた小山ゆうのペンタッチで描かれる登場人物達も好感が持てます。もちろん戦闘シーンは一切の妥協なく真剣勝負ですが、親子愛・友情・初恋がとても自然でひとしきりせつなく、人間の弱さ・脆さの表現が上手くて読みながら何度も泣いてしまいました。女の子でも読みやすい名作ボクシング漫画です。

本棚の中の本たち、減らそうと思ってこの夏これを１巻から最終巻まで読み切ったら手放そうかと考えて数年ぶりに読み始めたんですが．．

第１巻から泣かされました。
何度読んでも、というか歳を取るごとに泣かされる度合いも、いや増しに増していく思いです。

とうちゃんとボクシングだけに全世界であるかのような５才の男の子。

31才の父親。17才でデビューしたばかりの天才、関拳児。
子供の頃読んだ時には、こういう年令に頓着せずに読んでたのが、大人になって読んでみると、30才を過ぎたボクサーが17才の天才と一戦交えることや、17才でコーチやスタッフ、マスコミにちやほやされ囲まれている男の心のあり方、などを思い、新たな感慨が生まれます。

こうしてまた、手放せずに、年老いてからも再読するに違いない。。

ぼくが当時５歳の時、同じ５歳である元気に影響され、ボクシングの真似事をしていました。それから２５年。
ボクシングの道は歩みませんでしたが、今でも「がんばれ元気」を思い出したりします。

大人になり、物を書いたり、演出したりする立場になると、「がんばれ元気」が不朽の名作であることを読むたびに実感します。他のマンガではそうない「……」という沈黙を使った、人物の内面描写や、昭和のリアルな生活描写。人の生き様や思いが圧縮されていて、とても感銘を受けます。

ドラマ以上のリアルなドラマと人間描写。この作品は、ぼくの中で今でも息づいています。
