　真実を知ろうとジェルミを問い詰め、揺らぐイアンの姿は、漫画という手法でしか表現できないような描き方で、読み手に迫ってくる。それまでの父親像が崩れていくイアンが、実父によって傷付けられ絶望の底に落ちていったジェルミのことを思う時、人間の絶対なる孤独とでいうようなものを知る。その数ページは圧巻だ。
　どんどん落ちていくジェルミと、イアンはどうつきあっていくのだろう。ジェルミの苦しみを見逃した過去の場面の一つ一つを思い出し、確認していく作業をしているイアンの真摯な姿勢に、自分をごまかす自分を許さないという決意を感じる。

イアンに問いつめられ、幻覚に苦しめられ、ジェルミは入水自殺を図る。イアンとリンドンによって助けられたジェルミは、ついに真実を告白する。衝撃の事実を聞き、それを受け止められないイアンは一度は受容し、再び否定し・・・を繰り返す。イアンに告白内容を否定されたジェルミはさらに傷つき、「あんたの知りたい真実はなんだ」「もう二度と、一生顔を見たくない」とイアンに叫ぶ。心を閉ざしたままボストンに帰ってしまうジェルミ。

イアンは真実から目を背け、ジェルミのことを忘れると決めたが、ある日、グレッグの部屋でグレッグの異常性行為の証拠の品を見つけてしまった！！パズルのピースがはまるように真実が見えてきた時、イアンはもう一度真実に向き合うと決意した。ボストンに行方不明のジェルミを探しに行くイアン。やっと見つけたジェルミは・・・。

「気のせいだ、そんなはずはないと思っていれば、知っていても知らないふりはできる」というリンドンの言葉は、自分自身の中にもある弱さを突きつけられたように心に響いた。
