 「ぼくのすんでいるところは―／山と海しかない　しずかな町で―／はしに行くとどんどん貧乏になる。／そのいちばん　はしっこが／ぼくの家だ―」。腹違いの兄、一太。突然現れた、美しくてやさしい年の離れた姉、神子（かのこ）。そして「ぼく」、二太。クスリを売る。体を売る。金を貸す。とりたてる。この町の多くの大人たちは、そんなふうにして生きている。

   神子ねえちゃんは言う。「泣いたらハラがふくれるかあ。泣いてるヒマがあったら、笑ええ!!」。ヤク中の父を亡くしたばかりの少女は、うまく泣くことさえできずに、不思議そうにこう言う。「息するたびにな、ノドの奥に小石みたいのがたまるんよ。食い物の味わからへん」。むき出しの現実を見ながら、幼い心にいくつもの決意を刻んで「ぼく」は成長していく。

   映画化（2003年）にあわせて、オールカラー全3巻だったものを白黒の普及版として1冊にまとめたもの。見開き2ページのショートストーリー114話で構成。巻頭には、描きおろしのカラー漫画が4ページ収録されている。日々の出来事を2ページで描きつつ、一太が家を出るあたりからは全体を通して話に流れが出てくる。彼らはいつも、あきらめたような、悲しいような笑みを顔に貼り付けて、痛いほどにただただ求めている。自分の家で、家族そろって暮らすことを。ともに食卓を囲むことを。ラストシーンで二太が見せる笑顔は、痛ましさと同時に少しの希望を感じさせ、いつまでも胸に残る。（門倉紫麻）

　例えば聖書なんかを読んでみると、びっくりするほどアンモラルなエピソードがたくさんあるわけで、隣人愛を説くようなキリスト教のイメージとは相当なギャップを感じることだろう。

　この作品も同じように、一見すると毒とシモネタとアンモラルのオンパレードに見えてしまうかもしれない。しかし現実とは不条理で、決して美しいものではないのだと知っている人にとっては、その向こう側にある生そのものの力強さ、美しさに気づくのではないだろうか。

　「癒し」には二種類ある。つらい現実から一時的に目をそむけるものと、清も濁もまるごと受け入れるもの。前者では癒されない人たちにこそお勧めします。

西原作品の中でも一、ニを争う名作。

ささやかな幸せと、それすらままならない残酷な世界を正面から描いています。

それでいて重い作品にならないのは、あくまで可愛らしいキャラクター群と、
一太、ニ太、神子達が自分の人生を受け入れて生きている姿が潔いからでしょうか。

ため息しか出ないような心持の時に読むと、じんわり沁みてくるものがあります。


・・・ですが、白黒での出版はもったいなさ過ぎ。

美大時代に「空気」が描けず、「お芸術」に挫折した西原ですが、
今では現役漫画家で最も「空気」を描くのがうまい部類の作家だと思います。

しかし、それも一重に、ベストパートナー「アシスタントの愛ちゃん」の彩色あってこそ。

白黒でも名作であることに変わりは無いのですが、
やはり、オールカラーのオリジナル版で読んでほしい漫画です。

星３つなのは、あくまで、「オリジナルと比べたら」。
平均点と言う意味での星３つではありません。

単行本（全3巻）はオールカラーですが、その全話を白黒でまとめたお得版。
カラー書き下ろしの新作も4Pほど収録されています。
生きていく強さにあふれた作品。
