西原理恵子さんの若い頃の（多分）実話です。まだ何者でもなくて、何者かになりたくて、
必死に頑張っている女の子が、その道でモノになるまでの話。
過激なギャグはいっさい無し。ひとりではいられないどこか甘えたの女の子が、
人間として漫画家として腹をくくるまでの成長過程をリリカルに描いています。
女がひとり生きていくのは大変。西原さんみたいな表現者じゃなくても、そしてもう決して若くない女でも、
この痛さは身にしみます。仕事で行き詰まっている方、人生に先の見えない方、西原漫画を読んでまた明日も頑張りましょう。

西原自身の物語。

最後は泣けました。
読み終わってよし、私も頑張らないと。
そう思えました。
単純な絵と単純なストーリー。
でもそこに、等身大のサイバラが、勇気付けてくれる。

　1964年生まれの西原理恵子が美大に通うため上京した80年代当時を振り返ったエッセイ風漫画です。歌舞伎町のミニスカパブのウエイトレスとしてバイトしていた経験や、職もなくぶらぶらしていたヒモのような彼氏との同棲生活、売れないイラストレーターとして苦闘する日々。どれもが痛々しく苦い想い出に彩られています。

　本書の魅力は、高知から出てきて、将来自分がどうなるかもわからない不安に満ちた毎日を綴りながら、安易な癒しを求めたりせず、きれいごとでは済まない世の中の厳しさを著者がきちんと受けとめているところにあります。

　ヒリつくほど厳しい世間を前にして、著者は上京当初こそ途方にくれてメソメソしているばかりです。しかしやがて彼女は、歯を食いしばって背伸びして、何かを成し遂げていくことになります。そのままの自分でいいんだよ、と誰かが言ってくれることをいつまでも期待して大人しくしていたりはしません。そんな著者の若い頃の姿は、やはりカッコイイと私は思うのです。

　ミニスカパブのバイト中に酔客が彼女に心ない言葉を投げつけます。著者はそうした「しんどい言葉」を笑って受け流す努力を続けるうちに、顔面麻痺になってしまいます。

　ところがパブの店長は、酔客の態度にしゅんとしている著者に対してこう言い放ちます。
　「ばかやろー。だから高い時給がもらえんだ」
　著者は「あ　なるほど」と思うのです。そこに私は著者の健全な精神を見ます。

　やがて自信と度胸を身につけた著者は、仕事もせずにぶらぶらしている彼氏や、連載を打ち切られたといって大泣きする同業者、悪口言っているばかりの売れない先輩などに対して、大変厳しい言葉を浴びせかけます。それはまさに店長がかつて彼女に言い放った言葉のようです。
　くよくよしているヒマがあるくらいなら、感じた痛みをバネにして自分を一段上に押し上げるべき。本書のメッセージはそこにあると私は思います。
