主人公の土方歳三を、超人的な存在としてはなく等身大の悩める青年として描いている所が良い。本巻では土方の青年時代にスポットを当てているが、冒頭では新撰組として活躍する姿も描かれ、｢色が黒くてヒラメのような顔」と永倉が語り残した沖田総司は、他作品群では多くの場合、美少女のような顔であったりするのだが（笑）、本作品では｢ヒラメ顔」と言う要素を盛り込みながらも、なかなか渋くて男前な青年に描かれていて個人的には非常に嬉しい。

土方歳三ファンはもちろん、沖田総司ファンにもお勧めの作品。

少年漫画なのに、主役の土方（歳三）さんが意外と優男な美形でびっくりしました。やんちゃな少年という雰囲気が強くて、「鬼」と畏怖されるシーンにも言葉ほどの冷たい空気を感じさせません。絵が丁寧で綺麗な分、少年漫画特有のインパクトや力強さは稀薄かも。

逆に沖田総司はひょろっとひらめ顔、という感じで、性格も飄々としててこれまた意表をつくビジュアル。一見総司の方が土方さんより老けてみえるくらい（笑）この辺が、ビジュアル系総司路線が主流の少女漫画と、一線を画したい部分なのかもしれません。

そんな土方歳三と近藤勇との出逢い、沖田総司との出逢いがひとつずつじっくり描かれ、京都で新撰組を誕生させた彼の心の中の「火種」がしっかり表現されている本作。人物や背景の書き込みはかなり上品な仕上がりなので、細部までじっくり読んで楽しめます。

多摩時代のエピソードは、試衛館の三人に的を絞ってすっきりと描かれているので、のちの新撰組の支柱となる人物たちがどう表現されていくかは今後のお楽しみといったところでしょうか？

ストーリーは青春真面目路線。ですが、ところどころに作者のアソビゴコロを利かせた演出があって、微笑ましいです（笑）

「さよなら新撰組」という副題が、今からミョーにきになってしまっているので、今後の展開で何かこれまでの新撰組モノと違った演出があるのか、楽しみ。

土方歳三が主人公の漫画です。とにかく絵が綺麗です。主人公である土方は最高に美男子に描かれています。その他、沖田総司や近藤勇も魅力的に描かれています。この巻は土方や近藤の多摩時代のお話がメインです。最初に少しだけ京での新撰組時代の話が書かれていて、その後二人が出会う所まで話は遡ります。したがって、いきなり華やかな新撰組の活躍を期待して読むと少々退屈に感じるかもしれません。しかし、それだけ土方について最初から丁寧に描かれているということにもなります。これから除々に京での活躍も描かれていきます。新撰組ファンは読んで損はない漫画でしょう。
