８巻まで読むとどんな話かが明らかになります。 話が立ちあがるまでに（連載全体が単一の長編になっているようだ） かなりの時間をかけています。大御所ならではのやり方でしょう。 そこまで読んでから全部読むか読まないか判断するのをお勧めします。

子供の読者を対象にしているはずですが、よく構成された物語は

子供だけに読ませるにはもったいない出来映えです。 親子で楽しむことのできる作品でもあります。

らんま同様、対象読者を一新した作品。
らんまと違うのは、作風までガラリと変えてしまったこと。
しかし、例に漏れずヒット。
高橋作品だから売れた、と言う批判をよく聞くが、果たしてそうだろうか。
否、漫画の人気はやはり内容による。
漫画の神様手塚治虫は「あんたの時代は終わった」と打ち切られ、サンデーのもう一つの顔・あだち充も打ち切りをくらったことがある。
名前だけでは作品は売れない。

珍しくストーリー性があり、テーマは重く深みを感じさせるが、子供も大人も楽しめる。
最近のダラダラ感、マンネリ感は否めないが、今なお多くのファンがいる。
個人的には、この作品の中盤までは、間違いなく最高傑作であると思う。

記念すべき「犬夜叉」の第一巻です。ごく普通の生活がスリップして別の時代と繋がってしまう、という設定ですが、高橋留美子さんの描くキャラクターが、可笑しくて惹きこまれてしまいます。伝奇を現代の少女の感覚で語るところがクールでとても好きです。子供たちは、この作品の魅力を既に知り尽くしていると思います。是非、大人の人や普段は漫画を読まない、という方に試していただきたいと思います。
