コウ、東らが率いる青秀学園の甲子園への道のりも残すところあと5試合。それは、かの「若葉の見た夢」を正夢にするまでの道のりでもある。
しかしその途上、ある人物が病に倒れる。本人は気丈に振る舞うものの、それを知ってしまった青秀ナインの間にも、少なからずの動揺が生まれて…。

かつて漫画評論家の大塚英志は、手塚治虫以降の日本のマンガの歴史を、傷つくことのない記号でしかないキャラの歴史として厳しく断罪した。キャラクターでは死は描けない。読む者にそれと感じさせる死を描かなければならないと、彼は言う。
だが必ずしもそうなのだろうか。死はそれを直接かつ激しくグロテスクに描かなければ、死として受け止められない。少なくとも、あだち充作品を読んでいたら、そうとも言えないような気がする。

なぜならこの『クロスゲーム』ではそのある人物の病が、「死の予感」として周囲の友人たちに波紋のように広がっていく。そして彼らはそれによって、少なからぬ動揺をもよおされるのだ。そのことを、ある者は率直に心配し、ある者はその心配していない（治るに決まっている）を装いたいがために空元気を振り絞る。だがどちらにしろ、その人の「死の予感」を、皆が危惧するという形で死は確実にここに描かれているのだ。

死は実際にキャラクターを「殺害」しなくても、このように「死の予感」と、そしてそれの現実化におびえる周囲の登場人物を通して、読者に届くのではないか。
そういったことを想起させられた第15巻。

週刊サンデー誌上では連載再開になってるようですが、不定期のようで。 あだち充が書いてる時だけ毎週サンデーを買っていた私でしたが、今回は出遅れてしまい、コミックスが出るまで我慢していたのですが続きが気になる。 でもサンデーではやってない。悶々とします。 決勝戦直前で、続く、だもんな。
あだち先生は最終回が面白い唯一のマンガ家だと勝手に評価させていただいてます。 だってこうなってほしいなとか、こうなるのは嫌だなとか、予想してた展開ではなくて、あれそこは曖昧?でも妥当か、って印象で。主人公は基本的にみんなタッチの達ちゃんですから。素直じゃないですから。 いくつになっても、男は才能があるぶっきらぼうな同姓に憧れます。 俺だけですかね?
でも才能ないのにぶっきらぼうだと同性にも異性にも疎まれます。
才能のない私は仕方なく愛想だけはいい、勘違い男を演じてしまいます。
タッチだと木根、クロスゲームだと千田かな。
だから千田が活躍して決勝戦勝って、ハッピーエンドにならないかなぁ。
多分ちょっと裏切られるんだろうな。
良いほうに裏切られる方に期待。

最近、お気に入りの野球漫画。今までの展開と変わって、一挙に夏の甲子園の予選が進むとともに、悲劇の予感が...

このあとどう展開するんだろう。そろそろ、終盤なのかな。ハッピーエンドであってほしい。

『タッチ』も名作だったけど、『クロスゲーム』もかなりの出来。もう少し、続けて欲しいなぁ。
