優勝候補大本命竜旺戦完結編。
あるアクシデントによって三島敬太郎に四番打者の出番が回ってくる。

極限の状態に直面するとき、うろたえるのか楽しむのか。それが凡庸と非凡を分かつ線であるということをこのマンガは教えてくれる。三島は真剣なのだろうけれど、その胸中には試合の結果以上に、この状況をどこか楽しんでしまう感情がある。「勝ちたい」という気持ちもあるのだろうけれど、その裏から顔をのぞかせているのは、「敗北の恐怖」などでは決してない。むしろ彼は「大本命竜旺初戦敗退の危機」という状況を楽しんでいる。

そしてそれは光という強大な才能と相対したときの、彼の反応にも通ずるところがある。
他の人間の反応の方がわかりやすい。光のその無尽蔵のスタミナと、回を重ねるごとに球威が増してくる剛速球に対して、敵味方に限らずに人は驚嘆し、畏怖する。
しかし三島の反応は異質。
彼と光の二回目の対戦。三島は光というピッチャーを認めつつも、そのスイングの瞬間彼の脳裏によぎるのは、対戦相手への「感謝」に近い感情である。

「・・・忘れてたぜ。バッターボックスが、こんなにワクワクする場所だってことを――」

そしてそれは光に対する東の感情と近いし、光の三島や東に対してのそれとも近い。
彼らはそれぞれ多大なる才能を持っていることを認め合っている。しかし、だからといって相手と自分を比べたときに、自分が負けるかもしれないという恐怖心や嫉妬心は抱いているわけではない。彼らはこれまで自分の才能が抜きんですぎていたために、それがどれほどなのかを測る「ものさし」となる自分より優れた才能にめぐり合えなかったのだ。彼らはお互いに、自分と同じく底の見えない穴ぼこのような才能にめぐり合えたことを純粋に喜んでいる。

また光と青葉の関係は過渡期を迎えている。
光に対して青葉は、同じピッチャーであるということからも同一化して応援してはいたが、それ以上に根拠のない自信をもって、光が勝つことを信じて疑わなかった。

「できます！あいつなら――」

彼女が同一化しつつあるのは何を隠そう、光に全幅の信頼と愛情を注ぎ続けた亡き姉の存在だったのである。その同一化を彼女自身が認めるのか、否認するのか。それはまだわからない。
