今まで泣いたことのある漫画の中の１つ。それがこの『リアル』。
この漫画を読むと、毎回気づかされることがある。

「人の気持ちをストレートに受け取るっていうのは
　こんなにも心を揺れ動かされるものなんだ。」と。

多分、ものすごく当たり前だったことが、
今では当たり前ではなくなってる。
どっちがいいとか悪いとかは、別にどうでもいい。

ただ、物語の中に出てくる彼らの言葉一つ一つに
”人間”として生きていく上で最低限必要なモノを感じてしまうのだ。

そんな素敵な作品を読めて幸せです。

私の今までの人生と漫画で描かれている野宮の人生がどこか被っていて、いつもドキッ!っと、させられてしまいます。一度挫折してしまった時、元の舞台に戻ってくるのは非常に難しい。何度も諦めたい瞬間が襲ってくる。
先行きが全然分からない状態で自分がやっている事は未来に繋がっていると信じて奮闘している野宮の姿。私は野球でしたが、同じ再び舞台に這い上がろうと悪戦苦闘している身として、野宮の言動には目が離せません。今、私は4年余りの歳月を経て、やっと舞台に戻れるキッカケを掴みました。当然の事ながら周りからはド素人扱いです。しかし、諦めず進んで行けば道は繋がると信じています。このリアルは私の支柱そのものです。

リアル第七巻。
選手権大会が迫り、タイガースの練習も熱を帯びてくる。初戦の相手は優勝候補ドリームス。戸川は彼らからの加入の誘いを断り、気持ちの上でもタイガースでやっていく決心を固めたものの、ある約束をしてしまいなんとしてもドリームスに勝たなければならなくなってしまったのだった・・・。

このマンガの「リアル」というタイトルにはどのような意味が込められているのだろう。それは単に身障者スポーツの「ありのまま」を描いているからか？あるいは考えの浅い読者ならば障害をあつかっているからと答えるかもしれない。私はそうではないと思う。

我々が直面する現実には、少年マンガが教えてくれるような「起死回生の一発」や「土壇場の大逆転」なんて起きやしない。現実は淀みなく流れ、変化はあっても段階を踏んでやってくる。
野宮はバイク事故やバイトで繰り返す失敗などの不幸も自分の人生の一部分、現実だとして受け入れて、歯車がうまくかみ合い始めた人生に期待感を膨らませる。しかし、その先で待つのもやはり「現実的」な展開だ。
本当の現実は我々に何か教えてくれる物語ではないし、我々が何かを克服したらご褒美をくれるようなギブアンドテイクのシステムでもない。いくらページをめくったって書き込まれているのは救済ではない。現実は突き詰めていってもやはり現実でしかないのだ。『スラムダンク』という壮大なファンタジーを描ききった作者自身が、そのことに痛感しているからこそ、このマンガは描かれているのかもしれない。

またリアルの矛先は我々読者にも向けられている。
我々は身障者に出会った瞬間、無意識のうちに相手を人畜無害、善人といった画一的な人格の類型に当てはめてはいないか？このマンガのバスケットのシーンで彼が描いているのは、選手たちの血眼になってボールを追いかける姿や、ゲームに勝つための姑息さ、汗まみれになった肉体やゴムの焦げた臭い。彼らはまさにアスリートなのである。
このマンガは善人という牢獄に彼らを押し込めてきた我々の罪をも告発している。
