21巻は、究極の31巻にも匹敵する、素晴らしい巻だ。

それは、17巻から続いた陵南戦が、壮絶な展開でもって終わりを見るためでもあるが、それだけではない。この巻が圧倒的に私を感動させるのは、湘北のみならず陵南の選手たちのこれまで描かれてきた熱いドラマが、試合終了のブザーとその後の短いシーンに集約され、完結しているからなのだ。

辛苦を舐めつづけても決して夢をあきらめなかった赤木の男泣き。その赤木とともにチームを支えてきた小暮への「引退が延びたな」という桜木のセリフ。安西先生に対する皆の想い。そして弱小・湘北が全国進出を決めたという奇跡。他方、陵南・鬼の田岡監督の、自身の失意と選手たちへのねぎらい、思いやり。コンプレックスを抱きつつも、全国への夢と赤木へのライバル心を糧に闘ってきた魚住の静かな涙。勝利への執念を見せ続けた仙道や陵南選手たちの呆然とした顔・・・。

試合が決着したあのわずか数ページにこれだけのドラマが詰まっているのだ。
（井上雄彦の目線が主人公のチームにもライバルチームにも同じ高さにあることが、このドラマを生んだことは間違いない。）

21巻、涙なしには読めない。

野球やサッカーを題材にした漫画はいっぱいあるが、バスケをテーマにしていて、なおかつここまで面白く人気のあった漫画はこの「スラムダンク」以外無いだろう。この漫画がきっかけでバスケを始めた人は大勢いると聞いた。それほど多くの人に読まれ、影響を及ぼした漫画。

まだ読んだことが無い人は、ぜひ読んでみて欲しい。

名作スポーツ漫画「スラムダンク」。不純な動機でバスケットを始める主人公、桜木花道の成長を描いた作品です。チームの仲間から不良仲間、対戦相手の面々とも個性だった名脇役の面白さ、井上氏の丁寧なのに独特な迫力のある画、破天荒な主人公と美男子、流川との確執など面白さ満点でたちまち大人気漫画になりました。この連載がはじまってからは日本各地で中学校、高校においてバスケットボール部員が増えるなど影響力のほどは計りしれないものでした。そのスラムダンクの本巻ではついに残り２分となった陵南戦。リードしていた湘北だが、仙道の活躍で１点差まで詰め寄られた。さらにスタミナ切れした三井が倒れピンチに。だが、ここから素人・桜木が思わぬ働きをみせて…
