「安道奈津」や「富醂」「佐舞麗」で脚気の栄を救う挿話や南方と咲にふりかかる和宮毒殺未遂事件の災禍など、読み応えのある一巻。「作造り」に遭う彼の運命はどうなるのか･･･

それにしても、野風の「何か別の道を探した方が･･･先生のお役にも立てるのではないかと思いんす。あちきの本性を生かせる道を･･･」（68頁）との言葉の真意は･･･

巧みな伏線や登場人物の配置で物語がふくらんでいく様はさすがプロの仕事である。

タイムスリップをした仁を温かく迎え入れてくれた橘（たちばな）家。
それが江戸患いと言われた脚気にかかった、咲の母親、栄。玄米などの食事療法を
一切受け付けない、死を迎え入れた人物に、仁はアンドーナッツやプリンなどの、
江戸時代には無いお菓子を、それも玄米を主にしたもので治療していきます。

一方、花魁の野風にも一波乱。
歌舞伎で、花魁から普通の市民になった経緯を、芝居として取り上げられます。
鳴かず吹かずだった、仁の治療所に野風見たさに、人が集まります。
ＪＩＮの物語の中で、一番平和な時ではないでしょうか。

しかし、時間の流れは、仁を平和の中に身を置くことを許しません。
皇女　和宮親子親王に、献上したアンドーナッツのために、毒殺の嫌疑がかけられ
てしまいます。咲も一緒に捕らえられ、牢獄送りになる仁。

この時代の牢屋は過酷です。
牢名主が幅をきかせ、十二月だというのに水をかけて、土間に放置される仁。
低体温で、先も危ぶまれる仁に、得体のしれない影が襲います。
仁の運命は如何に！

　現代と江戸時代末期との時空間が交錯するミステリアスな背景と、ていねいな時代考証によって、読者を惹き付ける上質な作品です。それにしても、幕末は何という大変な激動期だったのかと、急転するストーリー展開に感嘆しながら読みました。
