この作品では、前作『天使の卵』で背負った心の傷を抱えながら生きている夏姫と歩太の10年後が描かれています。

春妃と歩太のように、8歳の年齢差を越えて付き合い始める夏姫と慎一。かつて姉に罵声を浴びせたことへの後悔と自責の念が夏姫のことばの端々に表れていますが、

「誰に何を言われても消えない後悔なら、自分で一生抱えていくしかないのよ」

という一言に、10年間の夏姫の苦しみと決意が集約されているような気がします。

その他、春妃のカーディガンを着ている夏姫を見て「お前のほうが似合うかも」と歩太が言った時に「ばかね。『おんなじくらい似合う』で構わないよ」と夏姫が返すシーンでは、明らかに10年前に電話で交わした会話を意識しながらも成長した2人の姿が垣間見れて、感慨深かったです。

大切なものをなくした登場人物の1人1人が本当の意味でその心の痛みから解放され、未来に向けて歩み始めるラストでは、とても幸せな気分になりました。

天使の卵の続きという事で、歩太が主人公なんだろうな〜と買ってみたら新キャラの慎一と夏姫を中心としたストーリーでした。内容は、『天使の卵』と似たような感じですが、成長した夏姫や歩太の姿が見れるので『天使の卵』を読んだ人は是非読んでみてください。

　「天使の卵」から10年、彼らの10年後を、実際の時間を経て村山さんが書き上げた続編。もちろんその作品を知らずとも楽しめる内容ではありますが、知っていると知らないとでは、ラストの感動の度合いが桁違いに違いますので、できれば「天使の卵」を先に読むことを強くお勧めします。
　この作品は村山さんが、「天使の卵」のキャラクターたちを救済するような思いで描いたような印象を受けます。前作の悲劇的なねラストで傷ついた人たちのそれぞれの葛藤と苦しみを描き、そして今回、ラストで、歩太、夏姫、真一、そして春姫、すべての人を救っています。前作はせつなく泣けましたが、今回はさわやかな感動で静かなる涙を誘います。これほど素晴らしい続編はめったにお目にかかれないと思います。

　また個人的に私はおばあちゃんっ子だったので、今回の主人公「真一」の心情は実によくわかりました。彼と祖母との物語りに実に心を締め付けられ、涙腺が熱くなりました。
　村山さんの多くの作品に共通しているメッセージとして、「今を大事に」というようなものがあるような気がします。生きていくうえでささやかな力を与えてくれる作品だと思います。ただの恋愛小説ではないので、ぜひ一人でも多くの人に読んでもらいたいですね。
