光の帝国の中の短編の続き的な作品で、短編の中で謎だったことが
分かるのでは無いかと言う期待を持って読み始めました。
序盤のほうは謎や､期待感で読み進みましたが、
中程あたりから、幻想的な世界になってきて、現実から浮き始めて、
分かりにくくなってきたように思いました。
個人的には､短編のほうが、まとまっていてよく出来ているように思います。

　ストーリーに一応のまとまりと整合性をつけた分、平凡な作品になってしまった。「光の帝国」中での異色作「オセロ・ゲーム」の続編である。前半は「オセロ・ゲーム」の謎をひきずったまま、尋常でない緊迫感をみせる。
　後半、ひねりの連続で、もうどうでもよくなってしまった。やたら複雑すぎるトリックの謎解きは、かえってスッキリしない。大きなトリックを精緻なリアリティーで支えてほしかった。「オセロ・ゲーム」の世界観が壊れてしまったようで、とても寂しい。
　「光の帝国」は大好きな作品だし、中でも「オセロ・ゲーム」は特に好きだ。読者のわがままに過ぎないが、むしろ、あの短編一編のまま放って置いてほしかった。

同じ常野物語でも、一年前に出版された「蒲公英草紙」とは随分雰囲気が異なります。「エンドゲーム」のプロローグ的短編作品である「オセロゲーム」（「光の帝国」に収録）自体、他のエピソードに比べおどろおどろしい感じのする異色作でしたが、今回は更にダークな話に仕上がっているように感じました。「蒲公英草紙」が明治時代の田舎を舞台にした牧歌的な幻想寓話だとすれば、この作品は人間の精神世界を舞台にしたサイコサスベンスといったところでしょうか？（個人的には筒井康隆の「エディプスの恋人」、「パプリカ」を思い出しました。）少々グロテスクな描写があったり、物語終盤で残酷な真実が明らかになったりと、正直読後感は「蒲公英草紙」の方がいいと思います。

けれども、常野物語の新たな分派作品としては非常に楽しめました。「光の帝国」に登場する春田記実子や西岡亜紀子、川添律、ツル先生などが「表」の物語の主人公であるとすれば、この物語に登場する拝島家の面々や火浦は常野一族の異端児であり、「裏」の物語の主人公。

過去の作品に登場した常野一族の面々が、どこか人間離れした聖人めいた人物として描かれていたのに対し、この物語に登場する常野一族達は皆どこか情緒不安定で心に何らかの影を抱えている。
「光の帝国」で、記実子や亜希子が近い将来に来るであろう「大仕事」に向かって一致団結していたのとは対照的に、拝島家や火浦は自分達の存在意義にすら疑問を抱きながら己のための戦いを水面下で孤独に繰り広げる。

ともすれば、温かい涙を流せる「いいお話」の集合体に陥りかねなかった（もちろん私も温かいストーリーは大好きですが）常野物語において、これまでの路線の真逆を突き進むストーリーを敢えて開拓したことは、今後このシリーズを拡大させていく上で非常に意義のあることではないでしょうか。同じ題材から、様々なジャンル、様々なテイストの作品を生み出すことができる恩田さんならではの作品だと思います。
