栗田有起さんは、最初に「ハミザベス」と「豆姉妹」を読んでから、すごく好きな作家さんになっていた。特に「豆姉妹」は、もうめちゃめちゃ楽しいお話だった。大傑作。


たしかこのお話は、2年か3年ほど前に、芥川賞の候補作になっていて、選考委員のどなたかの選評の「テルミーの可憐さ」という言葉だけが鮮明に頭に残っていた。


思ったとおり素晴らしいお話だった。最初のページでもう涙がにじんできてしまった。

涙を誘うというほどの場面ではないのだろうけれど、さりげない記述に、涙をにじまさずにはいられない空気というか、小説世界というか、ただ、ただ、素晴らしい。

小さい頃から、自分の家がなくて、あっちこっちの家を渡り歩き、母と祖母と自分との三人で居候ばかりを経験してきたテルミー。自分の枕すらなかったテルミー。

だけどまだ16歳なのに、しっかりと自立して生きているテルミー。

スラスラと読める、実に心地よく最後まで一気に読めてしまうのが、なんといっても魅力だ。

テルミーは、本当に可憐でけなげでチャーミングだ。

ラストに近づいたあたりの、ファミレスで、テルミーが自分のための洋服を縫おうと決心する場面、が特に好きだ。

ゆうぐれ時のファミレスの大きな窓から差し込むオレンジ色の夕日に照らされてキラキラと輝くテルミーがくっきりと浮かんだもの。って、そんな描写どこにもなかったけど。イメージで浮かんできてしまった。


読後感もめちゃめちゃ爽やかだった。

本当に読んでよかった。出会えてよかったと思える一冊だった

すばる文学賞を受賞した「ハミザベス」もなかなかの秀作だったが、こちらもそれに負けないくらいの秀作である。
「自立をして立派に生きていきたい」という反面、なかなか厳しい現実世界。でも「とりあえずできることはやってみよう」とする主人公の姿が温かな筆致で描き出されており、とても共感できる。

表題作はもちろん、個人的にはもう一作の「ABARE・DAICO」が気に入った。これからが期待できる作家だと感じた。おすすめ。

　『ハミザベス』ですばる文学賞を受賞した作者の２冊目。芥川賞候補にもなった表題作と他１作品が収められている。
　祖母と母のいる島から都会へと一人で出てきたまだ少女のテルミ。得意の洋裁で身を立てる決心をし、ふとした偶然で出会ったシナイちゃんに恋をする。
　淡々とストーリーは進むが、この作者独特の、幻想的な、温かい雰囲気が全体を包む。

　今後の成長が期待される実力派作家の、買って損はない一冊だと思います。
