手法を全く変えて、その後を描いた「白夜行」の続編。
一見、前作とは関係のない登場人物の話が続くのだが、徐々にシュークリームや「風とともに去りぬ」のエピソードなどで、主人公の正体が明らかになるあたりから、ゾクゾク感が増し、すべてのピースが組み合わさり、前作とのつながりがクリアになるにつれ、東野さんらしい、緻密さを堪能した。

一点、不満としては、彼女が守ろうとしたものが何だったのか？ということが、明らかにされなかったことだろうか？
スカーレットオハラの行動原理は、タラの家と土地を守ることであり、彼女はそのためにありとあらゆるものを犠牲にして痛烈な人生を歩んだ。

本作の美冬が抹消したかった過去については、２作をちゃんと読んでいれば分かるのだが、彼女がスカーレットオハラに憧れ、同じように生きたいと思ったのなら、彼女の恐るべき行動にも、何かスカーレットと同じような、他の何物も優先させてでも守りたい、一つ筋の通った行動原理みたいなものが存在するはずなのだ。

残念ながら、２作を通じても、その行動原理は明らかにはならなかった。ただ、このラストからすると、もう一つ、続編が書かれるに違いない。
そこで、彼女が、一番守りたかったものはなんだったのか？　明らかにされることを期待したい。

PS.「白夜行」「幻夜」を完全に理解するためには、「風とともに去りぬ」のストーリーを知っていることが必要です。これを機会に、是非読んでみましょう。

「白夜行」を読んだのは単行本の初版だったので、ストーリーは殆ど忘れているが「面白かった」という記憶はある。で、その続編ということで読んでみたが、結果、主人公美冬に何の魅力もなく、興ざめした。読んで損したかも。

ただし、長編とはいえ文章は軽いのですいすい読めるし、普段読書をしない人にでも入りやすい面白さがあり、あっと言う間に読ませるだけの本ではあると思う。退屈させない筆力はたいしたもの。

でもこういう本は主人公の悪どさ、冷徹さにどこか人間として共感できる部分があってこそ成り立つのであって、途中まではなかなか面白いが、最終章でそれまでの面白さを一気に崩す乱雑な終わり。

読後感が非常に悪い。

白夜行読後、「悪」には理由ありなんだな・・・と納得そして哀しくなりました。今回はどうなんでしょう。悪ぶりは前回を凌ぎます。成功ぶりも派手になってます。二作がまったく関連のない話としても読めますが、前作を読んだほうが二倍どきどきできるでしょう。
