二・二六事件をモチーフにした、時間旅行系物語。こう言ってしまうと陳腐に聞こえるが、モチーフの活かし方が秀逸。中盤まで読んだところで、松本清張の大著『二・二六事件』（全三巻・文藝春秋社）を購入してしまった。

最終盤までは、本当にただただ面白く、ケン・グリムウッドの『リプレイ』を上回る作品かとも感じるほど。ただ、あまりにも素晴らしい展開力から「この本の結論は相当に難しいな」とも感じさせた。そしてやはり、終章直前までの迫力からは、やや劣る結末を迎えてしまった。

ただ。本書においては「結末がコケている」と感じさせるほどではない。こういうテーマの本には、結末ですべてをダメにしてしまう本も数多い。しかし恩田陸氏のモチーフの活かし方は、たとえ結論がなくとも充分楽しめるもの。

読んで損のない作品だと思う。

　歴史をやり直すことは、果たして可能なのだろうか？時間遡航装置が開発された未来、人類は時間遡航によってもたらされた奇病に冒され、未曾有の危機にあった。人類の未来のために、やり直す過去として選ばれたのは２．２６事件。未来人によって選ばれた軍人３人は、自らを待ち受ける死の運命を知りながら、歴史を正しく再生させようとするのだが、謎の妨害が起こり…。

　世を正しくしようと願いながら、むなしく処刑されることになる陸軍の人々。彼らの心情に胸打たれる。とくに、歴史のキーマンとして選ばれた３人が、三者三様に日本の未来を考え、歴史を再生しつつも最前の道を模索する様子が感動的。最後まで彼らにスポットが当てられていればもっと好みだったのだが。私には、最初の興奮が最後まで持続しなかった。ラストに向けて、物語が急に収束してしまうのが残念である。
