貫井さんの４編からなる中編集です。どれもまずまず良く出来ていますが、『崩れる』に比べると完成度ではやや落ちるような気がしました。
ただ、『慟哭』には及ばないものの、４編ともかなりラストは驚かされますので、ミステリーとしてはかなり練られたプロットが楽しめます。

個人的には、「二十四羽の目撃者」がベストだと思います。この作品は、舞台がアメリカという事もあり、少しハードボイルドタッチで貫井さんらしくない（？）文章です。いつも貫井さんの文体は少し文章が固く（難しい２字や４字の熟語を使いすぎ？）、それにより緊迫感はあるのですが、少し流暢さに欠けると思いますが、この「二十四~」に関しては本当に楽しく読めました。初めて貫井さんを読まれる方には彼の魅力が集約された作品かなあと思ってます。

貫井徳郎といえば、ミステリファンの中ではあっと驚くどんでん返しのサプライズエンドを仕掛ける作家として有名。

この本は誘拐や殺人、現金強奪など、犯罪をテーマにした４編の中篇からなる。もちろん今回もサプライズエンドが仕掛けられた話もあるが、ストレートな話も用意されている。
個人的には、どんでん返しは読めてしまったので、ストレートな落ちの話に惹かれた。
実は文章力も構成力も高いレベルの作家だから、トリックに凝らなくても、十分読ませられるのだ。

貫井は文章がうまい。虚構を楽しませる業がある。私は「我が母の教えたまいし歌」がもっとも心に残った。どんでん返しのプロットの面白さを古典的手法ながら堪能させてくれながら、「母」と「女」の距離感を後から子供が追跡する心情が妙に痛々しかった。
