華人初のノーベル賞受賞の決め手になった作品、
これ以上ないくらいに直球なタイトル、
おまけに表紙は著者自筆の水墨画となると、
「霊山を求める男の魂の遍歴」を描いた
民族色たっぷりの作品を予想したくなるところだが、
その期待は間違いなく良い方向に裏切られるはずだ。

「おまえ」と「私」の二人を主人公とする別々の話が
隔章形式で語られていく手法はきわめて現代的で、
「おまえ」は旅先で出会った「彼女」との
半ば真剣な恋愛遊戯に溺れるばかりだし、
「私」はというと各地の伝説や奇譚に取材を繰り返すだけで、
「霊山」を求める旅はむしろ迂回や停滞を重ね、
決して直線状に進むことはないのだが、
大陸の住人に特有のものと言うべきか、
繊細でありながらどこか骨太な描写と相まって、
多種多様な語り口や文体が挿入されることで、
ほとんど神話から現代に至る膨大な中国史の全体が
一冊の書物の中に丸ごと描き込まれているかのような、
茫洋としたスケール感が生み出されている。

読み進めていくうちにどこかで波長が合えば、
重厚そのものとしか言いようのない読後感が得られるだろう。

おまえ、私、彼、と人称が変わりつつも一人のことが語られ、幻想と現実が入り乱れた小説を今までに読んだことがなく新鮮だった。癌を宣告され、余命幾許もなく中国を彷徨い歩く主人公。だが誤診だったことが分かり生き長らえる。様々な人々に触れ、自分自身と語り合いながら、なおも放浪を続ける。一つの場所には幾つもの神話や歴史や歌や様々なものがあり、また別の場所には土地固有のものがある。作家の目を通して歴史の奥深さを知ることができ、『霊山』からは刺激を受けることができた。

舞台は、まだ文化大革命の傷跡が色濃い、中国南東部。
霊山を求めて旅を続ける、スケールの大きな、骨太の作品だ。

「おまえが乗ったのは長距離バスだった」という言葉で、物語の幕が開くのだが、さながら、作品全体が、長距離バスの様だ。
「おまえ」と「私」という二人の登場人物が交互に登場するが、二人が多くの紆余曲折を経て、段々と歩み寄ってくる。
つまり、性格の大きく異なるこの二人は、実は、同一人物である事に、途中で気付く。

それにしても、この二人が同一人物であるとは、すぐには気付かなかった。
堅実で、抑制の効いた性格である私に対して、おまえは比較的奔放で、女性と性的にも戯れるばかりだ。

「私」が肺癌の宣告を受ける下りがあるが、この部分の心理的葛藤の激しさの描写は見物だ。
本文中には書かれていないが、結節性の肺炎を、癌だと誤診したのではないかと、私は想像する。
実はこれは、レントゲンでもＣＴでも、一見立派な肺癌に見えるのだ。

しかし、霊山を目指すという、究極の目的は変わらない。
この目的のために、物語は迂回に迂回を重ね、その間に、自分を多様な面から見つめる事になる。
一人の人間の二つの側面が描かれ、さらに、女性との関係も相まって、多くの側面が、浮き彫りにされる。

それにしても、何と型破りな作品だろう。
ただ、作品の骨格が強固なので、緻密な心理描写と、スケールの大きさを堪能出来る。

ノーベル文学賞受賞作品と聞いて、成る程と思った。
文学の香り高い、希有の名作だ。
