『珠玉の短編集』
まさに、そんな言葉が似合う１冊です。

いずれの短編も中国南部の澄んだ空気、人々の熱い息遣い、長江の豊かな河の流れ、そして濃い緑。
それらが、文章の端々から匂い立つような名作です。
生きる事への情熱、熱があるのです。

私がこの本に出会ったきっかけは朝日新聞の紹介文でした。

『~（略）~映画も短編も、実にすがすがしい。虚飾をすべて取り去った人間に触れたからに違いない。』（朝日新聞・天声人語より引用）

題名にある『山の郵便配達』は映画にもなり、中国アカデミー賞と言われる「中国金鶏賞」を受賞したことを申し添えておきます。

老若男女、全ての人にお勧めできる１冊です。

　中国という国を心から愛する人なら、きっとこの短編集が気に入るだろう。いずれの作品もまったく派手さは感じられないが、淡々と語られる人々の生活感情の中に何とも言えない味わいがある。勘違いしてほしくないのは、単なる人情ものではないこと。中国人は私たち日本人が想像する以上に、生活すること・生きることに対して貪欲で、抜け目がなくて、ずるくて、したたかで、タフなのだ。厳しい現実認識の上に立った明るいユーモア。私はこの本を読んで改めて中国や中国人が好きになった。

今から１０年程前になりますでしょうか。大学の時の第２外国語は中国語で、「今、大陸で大ヒット！」というこの本の原書を教材にしていた時期がありました。

原書は読みづらかったということもあってか、「辛気くさい話やなー」と思っていたのですが、翻訳されたこの本を手に取ってみると、あーら不思議、地味ながらもさわやかな、なんと心の暖まる内容なのでしょう！山道で踏み付けた雑草の青く直線的な香りが、風に運ばれて鼻孔をくすぐる様でした。
