5.0 out of 5 stars 海の色で綴られた海辺の幻想譚, 2003/3/24
地味で小さな本ですが、本を開けてびっくりしたのは文字の刷り色が何とも言えない鈍いブルーだったことです。この色は舞台となったスコットランドの海の色なのだと思った瞬間、北の海辺に引っ張られてしまうという心憎い本です。

北欧やスコットランドに残る「あざらし女房」の伝説を下敷きにし、島と海と精霊とそこに住んでいた一族の絆が結び直される瞬間を詩情豊かに、そして静かに描いています。

「あざらし女房」は羽衣伝説とよく似た伝説で、海の精セルキーがアザラシの皮を脱いで浜辺で遊んでいるところに通りかかった漁師が、その皮を隠してしまい、海の精を妻に迎える、という伝説です。このケルトの伝説が「再話」と言っていいほどうまく現代の中に再現されています。

翻訳も読みやすく、上!品で大人から子供まで楽しめる本ですが、今どきの騒々しいファンタジーに慣れた子供には若干地味かも知れません。
ですが、お休み前のベッドや静かな夜にゆったりとした気分で読んだり、読み聞かせるには最高の本だと思います。

これを読んでいると、スコットランドのヘブリディーズ諸島に行きたくなります。あの島々のどこかにフィオナが住んでいて、今日も海草のスープを作っているような気がしてしまいます。
ちなみに映画化もされ、そちらの方も非常によかったのですが、そちらはアイルランドの島、という設定になっているようです。

北国に憧れる私は、この本をたびたび読んでスコットランドの島の生活に浸っています。 私は食いしん坊でもあるので、ついお茶の時間の描写など食べ物の出てくる場面に注目してしまうのですが、そのように素朴な生活観のあふれる優しいファンタジーです。

スコットランド北西部のわびしい島を舞台に繰り広げられる静かで美しいお話です。木製のゆりかごと共に何年も前に海に消えた小さな弟が生きていると信じているフィオナ、生まれた小さな島を愛する気持ち、セルキー族の伝説、海の色で印刷された文字がお話の世界に読む者を引き込みます。
