ジョイスの『ユリシーズ』、文庫第３巻は、たった２挿話しか入っていない。それでこの厚みである。
まずひとつめは、いきなり古文・漢文調で始まる。ジョイスが、古代中世をはじめ、
昔の英語作品の文体を模写しているため、翻訳でも同時代の近接ジャンルの文体で訳しているのである。
ひとつめの挿話は、産院で子供が産まれるので、それにからめて生殖など性的なallusionが語られるが、
いかんせん古文なので、ほとんどわからなかった。
また、英語は、かなり早い時期から見た目には現在とほぼ一緒の文章になるため、
ここまで古っぽく翻訳する必要はないように思われる。
マロリー（１４８０）でさえ、現代の日本人が見ても大体はわかるであろう。
そのため、昔の文学の文体模写を、そのまま古文、文語調にうつしてしまうと、相当英語と日本語でギャップが出てしまう。
さて、つづく挿話では一転、劇のスタイルになり、それまでの４〜５倍のスピードで読めるようになる。
内容は、現実と虚構がないまぜになってややこしいが、娼家に向かったスティーブン・ディーダラス、
ブルームらの様子をベースにしつつ、それまでの出来事や心にかかっていることなどが出てくる劇である。
巻末には、相変わらず本一冊分はある詳細な注と、翻訳者の小論、地図つき。

この『ユリシーズ』の第三巻を買おうとなさっている方は、一巻、二巻とも読まれている方だと思いますが、
第一四挿話と第一五挿話しか入っていないにもかかわらず、
この第三巻はかなりきついですが、相変わらずジョイス特有の面白さも光っています。

まず、第一四挿話は、男たちの猥談が西洋古典文学の文体を模して叙述されています。
生々しい、俗っぽい話が堅い文体で描かれているのは面白い発想だと思うのですが、
西洋の古典がそれぞれ日本の古典の文体に置き換わっている（例えば、マロリー→紫式部、デフォー→井原西鶴など）ので、
なんか違った意味で滑稽な感じです。頑張って翻訳してくれているのは分かるのですが、もうちょっともったいない気がします。

第一五挿話は夢幻劇のような形式で描かれています。
ある娼館での出来事を戯曲形式で夢、現の区別無く記述されていますが、しかしこれは丁寧な註があるお陰で読めます。
この第一五挿話はとても長いのですが、読んでいるうちに、だんだんと「浮遊感覚」が感じられて、結構面白いです。
『ユリシーズ』にしては珍しく、ラストが感動的で、一八ある挿話のなかでもお気に入りです。

一巻、二巻まで読めた方なら、この三巻も「攻略」できるはずです。これを超えればゴールは近いです！
