クンデラがどんな風な書き方をするかというのはもう大概の方は知っているでしょう。そして彼の他の作品を気に入ったという人はこの「不滅」も読まれた方がいいと思います。ため息ばかりが出ました。この本と過ごすことのできた時間を持てて幸せだと思いました。１０年以上前、高校時代に読んだときは話の筋しかわかりませんでした。「不滅」というタイトルが少しロマンチックだなという印象しかありませんでした。クンデラは自らの広く深い知識をストーリーと結びつけて大きな織物をつくってしまうのです。私たちはその織物にくるまれるのもそれを丁寧に読み解いてもいいのです。読み上げたときにはしみじみとした感動と、一種の放心と読む前と違った自分がいるのです。素晴らしい本でした。

クンデラの作品は心理的描写が鋭く、強く共感すると同時に心を深くえぐられるようで、いつも自分の心の奥底を覗く思いがします。『不滅』は、とくにそう感じさせられるものでした。

作品中、クンデラはこんなような事を言っています。
どんな話？と尋ねられても答えられないような作品こそが、映像化できない「小説の醍醐味」をもつ作品だ（要約です）と。

『不滅』はその言葉通り、映像化できない小説だと思いました。どんな話なのか、悔しいけれど説明すらできない。小説中の人物とそうでない人物が同時に存在し、関わりあっていないと思いきや、突然同じ場面に登場してしまう。ゲーテとヘミングウェイが、あの世で不滅とは何ぞやと語り合ったりする。自由気ままな筋でありながら、それでも一貫して!「不滅」の意味を考えつづけています。そして結末は、意外なものでした。あるいは、ああいう終わり方こそがふさわしいのかもしれません。

クンデラは面白いけれど、難しい。難しいけれど、ついひきこまれてしまう。完全に理解できるほどの知識は私にはありませんが、それでも「読んでよかった、面白かった」と言える作品でした。

ミラン・クンデラは、「認識こそ、小説の唯一のモラルである。」と言い切る。また、「小説とは、反抒情的な詩である。」とも。
この二つの発言が、クンデラ作品全般の特異性をそのまま表している。プロットを練っただけの小説とは、格が違う。

そんなクンデラ作品の中でも、この「不滅」は最高傑作だと思う。物語の内容は、ラブ・ストーリー。
生と死という深みから織りなされた、ラブ・ストーリー。

そして、この作品を輝かせているのは、登場人物である「アニェス」という女性の存在である。繊細でいて、高尚。
彼女は捉える「人生において耐えられないのは、存在することではなく自分の自我であることなのだ。」

醒めた哲学的な思索と、壮大に混交する舞台が、静粛なハーモニーを奏でている。

クンデラ作品の中で、最も深く響き、読後は放心状態になりました。また、小説の醍醐味というものも、存分に感じました。
