大作です。幼少から、中年期になるまでのひとりの女性(茉梨)の生き様。そのなかで、変わってゆくもの(変わらざるを得ないもの)・全く変わらないもの。

茉梨の日常、様々なものや場所、男性との出会いと別れのなかで、それが溢れ出している。

人生という大河の流れに乗って思うさま、自由に生きる茉梨は、とうとう最後まで誰にも、どこにもとどまることはなかった。 そんな孤独も、この物語は鮮やかに描き出している。それが特に良かったと思う。

こんなに分厚い長編にもかかわらず、軽やかでみずみずしい、ちょっと切なくて、とても爽やかな読後感の物語。 まるでマスカットのようなお話です。

二人の人生（の途中）を10日間かけて読みました。
「右岸」を最初に読みきって「左岸」を読みながら「右岸」に戻りと。
「左岸」だけで終わる人はいないかと思いますが、もし「左岸」が物足りなかったら
「右岸」も読んでみてください。
「左岸」を読み終えた後、信じられないことなのですが泣いてしまいました。
九から茉莉へのの手紙の結び「お互い今日を乗り越えてましょう」は沁みました。
主人公たち以外の人の人生（生い立ち）も気になります。
「左岸」「右岸」の主人公以外の人の登場人物のスピンオフというか外伝も読んでみたいです。

茉莉と言う子猫のように、しなやかに生きる女性の物語。
わがままで、頑固、身勝手極まりない行動。自分の受ける傷には
敏感だが、相手に与えるダメージには極めて鈍感。
やることなすこと中途半端。まるで現代女性のイメージそのもの。
しかし、そんな女性なのに、ご都合主義の話の展開にも、
特別な嫌悪感も抱かせず、長々しい話を最後まで読ませるのはさすが。
江國のマジックに拍手。
