緋田家の面々をめぐる家族小説。
悠々自適の隠居生活を送るはずだった７２歳の元歯科医・龍太郎の家に
嫁いだ娘たちが次々戻ってきて、あれよあれよという間に８人（後に９人）
の大家族に……。

ところが、てんやわんやの、みんなで力を合わせてという、家族の話ではない。
今どきの世知辛いキーワードが各人の抱える問題として語られる。
引きこもり、自己破産、離婚した後の高齢出産、認知症等々……。
各人の章で、それぞれの思いや今に至るまでのことが語られ、
抱える問題がありながらも悲惨さや暗さはなく、むしろドライで
笑いをさそうような場面も多々ある。
語り口もテンポよく、するすると話が進んで飽きさせない。
気の強い長女、次女の存在感が抜群にいい。対極にある引きこもりの長男の
心の動きが徐々に行動にもおよんで、一歩を踏み出すに至るまでが印象的だ。

家を束ねる家長的な存在はなく、お互いに心配したり気にかけあったりはしても
家族なんだからと、ぐいっと踏みこんでいく図々しさはない。
いや、むしろ家族という間柄だからこそお互いに単刀直入に物が言いにくいということは
あるだろう。
我が身を振り返れば、成人した子についてなど実のところどれほどのことを
知っているのか？と考える。

中島京子さんらしい、諧謔味をおびた各章のタイトルの付け方もよかった。
“雨降って地固まる”ではないけれど、大家族もそれぞれの「ホーム」へと
歩を進め、気を揉みつつ腹も立てつつ、傍観者的な立場に甘んじていた龍太郎が
独りごちる最後のシーンは、穏やかで安寧で、ほこほことした気持ちで頁を閉じた。

　嫁に行った娘たちが次々戻ってきて、ついに8人の大家族に！
　確かにこのご時世に四世代8人は多い。
　その家族たちそれぞれが語るかたちの短編連作集。
　
　昔のホームドラマのように、（「マンモス家族」「寺内貫太郎一家」やら「パパ大好き」「うちのママは世界一」
なんてのを思い出してしまうが‥）中心となる人物がいて「一人の悩みを皆で解決！」みたいな良い家族の
一家団欒からは、大分様変わりしている。
　いかにも現代らしく、引きこもり、登校拒否、離婚、自己破産などのテーマがあり、家族の皆それぞれの
生活パターンやプライバシーを折込み、なかなか面白い、よく出来たホームドラマとなっている。
　ホームドラマは「いろいろあったけれど、落ち着くところに落ち着く」のがお約束。
　その通り、ほのぼのとして破綻のないところは、昔も今も変わらない。

平成の社会問題を濃縮したような小説。しかし、深刻ではない。どこかおおらかでのびのびしている。それでいのか？そんなことで問題が解決するのか？ご心配なく。平成の世の中にあっては何事も平らかに成るのである。すべては時間が解決してくれる。それにしてもご都合主義ではないか！！などと怒ることも野暮である。すべては、予定調和な心地よい世界の中に包み込まれていく。陽だまりを読んでいるようなそんな印象の小説である。
