ル・カレの傑作であり、上下巻ともまったく飽きずに読むことができた。決してベストセラーになって万人にウケる内容ではないが、深く重厚で濃密。サラリと語られる状況にアフリカが過去から現在まで置かれ続けている悲惨さと、何も変わらない西側のありように胸が痛む。

ただ、テッサとアーノルド医師の二人の死、そして主人公のジャスティンのテッサ死後の行動について、個人的に納得がいかないところがある。
テッサたちは崇高な行為によって殺されるけれど、もちろん殺害する側をかばう点はないけれど、テッサとアーノルド側にもっと賢明なやり方があったはず。
アフリカ、という国を誰よりも知っているこの二人ならば。

そしてその夫ジャスティンの行動も個人的な盲執によるもので、美化しようと思えば美談だが、見方を変えると単なるおろかな男にしか見えない。

といいながらも、非常に面白く、この上下巻を読んでいる間は早く読みたくて、読むのももったいなくて、という貴重な時間だった。アフリカの内戦、現状をもっと知りたくなる。

ちなみに、レイフ・ファインズとレイチェル・ワイズによる映画も原作と多少異なる点もあるが秀逸。
この二人の知的な英国人俳優と原作者ジョン・ル・カレが中心となり、この映画をきっかけに「Constant Gardener Trust」が設立された。

もちろん、ル・カレの代表作は『寒い国〜』やスマイリー三部作などのエスピオナージだが、今日的な題材で70歳にして新境地を切り開いたともいえるこの作品の素晴らしさには新鮮な感動をおぼえた。もちろん、後味が良いとはいえないが、この作品としてはこのエンディングが必然なのだろう。ケニアの首都ナイロビの英国高等弁務官事務所の外交官で、庭いじりの好きな温厚な紳士ジャスティン・クエイル。彼の日常は、若妻テッサの死を契機に変貌をとげる。大製薬企業、新薬を開発した医師、そして利権をむさぼる複数の者たち。巻末にある「著者の覚え書き」に、「いっさい現実世界にもとづいていない」とことわっていること自体が、大いにミステリーなのだ。

アフリカ駐在の英国人外交官の若く美しい妻が惨殺される。その死の真相を解明しようと、妻の生前の行動に迫るジャスティン。次第に、企業と官僚との癒着、巨大医薬品企業の不正問題が明らかになっていく...

と、非常に重いテーマで読後感も重い。映画の原作として、軽い気持ちで手に取った私のような人には、ちょっとつらい作品です。上巻の途中からすでに、どう終わらせるのだろうと不安になってきましたが、最後まで重いままでした。ただ、日本では中々目や耳にすることのない問題について考えさせられる作品であることは確かです。
