アカデミー賞授賞式で見たレイチェル・ワイズの知的な美しさと
アフリカが舞台の大作という映画の宣伝に惹かれ原作の本書を
手にしたが、これほど重い内容とは予想すらしなかった。

若く美しいテッサを妻にした穏やかな外交官のジャスティン。
自分の職務と私生活以外にはさしたる興味のなかった彼が、
アフリカとある多国籍企業の関係を調査中に殺害されたテッサの足跡を
たどるうち、使命感を持つ人間に変貌していく。

数々の脅しにもめげず崇高な生き方を貫いたテッサ、企業の論理に
翻弄される医師達、自国の国益と保身に走る老獪な外務省の役人たち。
ル・カレは現代の世界がはらんだ矛盾のある側面を緻密に描き出す。
本作発表時に70才であった彼の創作力と意欲には驚嘆を禁じえない。

苦い結末を首肯しがたく感じる読者もいると思うが、
アフリカと欧米の関係や発展途上国への援助などに
興味のある人には一度目を通してもらいたいと思った。

ジョン・ル・カレという人、初めての作家でしたが、
タイトルにひかれ、一気にその世界に引き込まれ、
すぐに読み終え・・・、ため息でした。

人物造形、プロット、舞台装置など、すべてが映画向き。
全体を流れるトーンや、アフリカの風景などから
「イングリッシュ・ペイシェント」を思い浮かべました。

そしたら、あとがきによると、

なんとレイフ・ファインズが主役で映画化が決まっているのだそう。
偏執的な役をやらせればピカ一のレイフ・ファインズなので、
（「イングリッシュ・ペイシェント」でもある意味そうでした）
私の勝手キャスティングでは彼のことは思い浮かべなかったけど、
確かに彼は英国人だし、演技うまいし、

きっと上手に、心優しき紳士、ジャスティンになりきってくれるのでしょう。

そして強い意志を持って突き進む美人若妻は？
ハンサムな黒人医師はいったい誰がやってくれるのでしょう？
音楽も「イングリッシュ・ペイシェント」の
ガブリエル・ヤールのように素敵なものを期待します。

最後に小説に戻って・・・
彼の別の作品を読んでみようと思います。

もう70才を超えているんではないでしょうか。
でも、衰えるどころかますます創作意欲は旺盛です。

アフリカを食い物にして巨大な利益をあげる製薬会社の暗部を
例によって重厚な筆で描いています。

ストーリーはじれったいほどゆっくりなのでその手の本が
お好みな人は向かないかもしれません。

あえてジャンル分けをするとル・カレはスパイ小説というカテゴリー
に入りますが実際には純文学と何ら変わりはありません。

やや、誤った結婚をしてしまった主人公の気持ちがせつせつと
描かれていて結構辛いものがあります。

最高傑作ではないけれど傑作。因みに僕の中でル・カレの作品に
ランキングをつけると
１　パーフェクトスパイ

２　リトルドラマーガール
３　スマイリー三部作
となります。
