友人宅のある島に、ベビーカーに乗った息子を連れてやって来た主人公。
島に着いてからというもの、なにやら不安に駆られ、友人に会いに行くのをためらっている。
意を決して、夕食後一人訪ねると、家には明かりがない。どうやら留守のようだ。庭は荒れているし、手紙も随分たまっている。その時、ガレージの方で物音が・・・。

暗い色調の幻想的な風景の中、主人公は怪しげな妄想をし始める。
夜毎息子を寝かしつけると、何かに吸い寄せられるように寝静まった村へ・・・。

波に乗って行きつ戻りつ、たゆたいながら、ラストへと少しずつ流れるように進む。
他の作品と同様、繊細・緻密な描写やそこから漂ってくる雰囲気、ユーモアのある言い回しが良い。
この作品では幾分ユーモアの面は抑えられ、より丁寧に情景が描写されている。
何でもないものがとても魅力的に見えてくる。

次作「テレヴィジョン」まで長い長い休みを取ったため筆を折ったかと思われた彼のいわば第一期の集大成。（タクシーの中でぺたっと座ってつま先をぴんと立て砂浜で見つけたスリッパに頬ずりする）息子へのさりげない愛と不在の妻への隠れた想いと深い孤独に包まれた息つまるサスペンス。何が小説にできないか、何ものも小説にできることを示した佳作。

　「今朝、港で猫の死体を見た。」これが、この小説の冒頭である。このフレーズからアルベール・カミュの「異邦人」の冒頭「けさ、ママンが死んだ。」を連想したのは私だけだろうか？もっとも、内容は「異邦人」とはぜんぜん違うものである。

　ストーリーは、33歳の主人公がその子供（赤ん坊）とともにビアッジ家という一家を、観光シーズンも終わった晩秋、サスエロという小さな港町に訪ねるものの、理由のわからない不安感によって実際に会うことを先延ばししているというものである。

　ビアッジ家に行くことを「ためらう」間、主人公はサスエロやその隣町をさすらうのだが、「猫の死体」や「古いグレーのメルセデス」等、滞在中に目にしたものからいろいろな連想をし、その連想が途中まではあるいは事実かもしれないと読者に思わせる作者の筆力はすばらしいと思う。

　読み進めていくうちに、理由のわからない不安感は33歳という年齢も関係しているのかとも思ったりする。訳者である野崎歓氏のあとがきでも述べられているように、韜晦な文章中で作者の生の声とも思われる「僕は33歳、つまり青春の終わる歳を迎えたところなのである。」といったフレーズからもそれが読み取れると思われる。

　実は、この作品を購入したのはかなり以前で、最近他に電車内で読むものがなくなったため、途中まで読んでそのままになっていたこの本を本棚から引っ張りだして読んだことから、読み進めるという点ではある程度労力がいるかもしれない。しかし、曖昧模糊とした、不思議な感じが好きな人にはお勧めする。

　星３つの理由は、読後感＋５、読み進める労力-２である。
