正式名称は『ヨーク出身の船乗り、ロビンソン・クルーソーの生涯と不思議で驚くべき冒険』。
1719年刊行。以降『その後の冒険』『反省録』と続くロビンソン・クルーソーシリーズの第一部。

小学生の頃、学級文庫の棚にあった抄訳を読んだ際には、「単なる漂流者のサバイバル物語」
としか感想を持たなかったが、10年余の時を経て子供向けではない本作を手に取った際には
その分厚さに仰天し、内容を読んで濃密さと思想性と緩急に富んだ展開にグイグイと引き込まれた。

1719年といえば生類憐れみの令が廃止され、大岡越前が江戸町奉行に就任した江戸時代の事であり、
内容も古臭いつまらないものではないかと思ったが、とんでもない。
今をもってしても古さを感じさせない作品であり、その理由は時代を超えてもなお共感できる
若き日のロビンソンの数々の葛藤、強い夢を持つが故の逃避と放浪癖、漂着後の行動の合理性にある。
また、この作品は凡百のサバイバル作品と違い、根幹となる深い思想があり、
思想──即ちキリスト教の信仰の問題を骨子として形成されている。

神に祈ったにも関わらず報われず無人島に漂流し、苦難だらけの生活を送り自らの不運を呪うロビンソン。
現世利益を中心に置いた、表層的かつ浅薄な信仰しか持ち合わせていなかった彼だが、
数々の艱難辛苦を経るうちに、それでも自らが生かされている僥倖を知り、
悲喜こもごもの様々な出来事も神の与えた試練として受け止め、真の信仰に目覚めてゆく…。
この辺りキリスト教になじみの薄い日本人は理解し難い部分かも知れないが、
キリスト教徒、特に信仰に対して不安や不信を持った人間であればより楽しく、そして深く本作を読む事ができるだろう。

また倫理的・宗教的考察を前面に出した本作品であるが、主人公がありあわせの材料で
住居、衣類、道具、農作者をたった一人で作り上げ、次第に豊かになりつつも島の探索が進んでいく様は
手に取るように進展がはっきりしており面白く、更にそれらの行動の節々にも、
イギリスの近代化を支えてきた清教徒たちの近代合理主義精神というべきものが垣間見られるのが興味深い。
人食い人種の話など際どい箇所もあるが、社会学的な観点からも興味深く読む事ができる、
大人から子供まで広く楽しめるお勧めの作品である。

といわれているように、文体は極めて写実的で、現代小説に見られる細かい心理描写や人間関係などは描かれていない。ロビンソンは３０年以上も孤島で暮らしていくわけだが、彼の優れたアイディアや生きるための工夫は見事で、そこは読んでいておもしろい。

誰もが知っている、この話。ですが、活字としてちゃんと読んだことが無かったんですよね。今回こうやって改めて本として読んでみると、なぜこの本が出版後数百年たっても、異国の地で増刷を繰り返し存続するのか、ということを知ることができたと思います。
忙しい大人にこそ読んでほしい本です。
