ヴェトナム戦記である「輝ける闇」以降のヘミングウェイ的路線を行く
開高に対しては賛否両論が分かれるが、私自身は開高文学のあり方から
すれば必然的なものであったと考える。彼はサントリーの同僚である
山口瞳のように日常生活をアイロニー、悲哀、ユーモアの力で奥行きの
深い世界として描く作家ではなく（それが日本の文学的伝統であるが）
あくまでも「非日常」「祝祭」「饗宴」（全て現在の日本には「ニセモノ」
しか存在していない）を求める作家であり、海外に目が向かうのは
ごく自然なことであると言えるだろう。本書では、開高がアマゾンの
大自然を背景に「饗宴」の限りを尽くしており、その華麗な文体は
開高の体験の一部たりとも逃してはいない。アマゾンの自然を
実物として知らない（大方はそうだろうが）読者でさえもあたかも
その場に居合わせているかのように感じ、「饗宴」の参加者と
なることができるであろう。

開高健と言えば、小説家にして食通、そして釣り人として人生を駆け抜けた、行動する文化人として有名ですが、本書は彼の、釣り人としての側面を、旅の日記として完璧に表現しきっています。

釣りの本なのにそこに書かれる事は、森羅万象幅広く、豊富な知識と経験を完璧なコンビネーションで組み合わせ、読者を開高ワールドへ引きずり込みます。

釣りも旅も興味がない、と言う人も、本書を読めば荷造りをして旅立ちたくなること請け合いです。

一冊読み終わって、イヤ、読んでいる途中にも強く感じたことは、著者の物書きとしてのスケールの大きさだ。決して高尚な文を書くわけでもなく、美しい文章を書くわけでもない。釣り、食、酒、下ネタ等、むしろ俗なものにまみれた文章かもしない。

それでも、これほど面白く、読んでいて引き込まれるのは何故だろう。それはたぶん、わざわざアマゾンまで行く氏の釣りに対する情熱や、何であれ凄いものに率直に「オーパ！」と驚く姿勢から感じられる人間としてのスケールの大きさがあるのではないかと思う。単に知識があるだけでなく、知性とユーモアのある“愛すべきオヤジ”としての。

だから途中で十年以上前に亡くなった、とカバーをふと見て知った時、ショックと惜しい人を亡くしたなという感情が自然とわいた。氏の作品を読んだのはこれが最初だったので余計に。

読んでいて単なる紀行文・体験談とは違うと違和感を抱いたが、解説を見て謎が解けた。氏はもちろん釣り師であり、ノンフィクション作家であることはこの本からもうかがえるが、小説家でありコピーライターでもあった。全て納得できる経歴だった。会って話を聞きたかった人だと思った。
