隻腕の美剣士というフレーズに惹かれて読みましたが、
その苛烈な生き様に見え隠れする人間的な温かみが
その悲劇性を際立たせているように思えます。
伊庭八郎がひたすらかっこよく描かれていて、
かっこいいだけでは物足りないという女性も多いのではないでしょうか。

池波正太郎の描く江戸の男たちは、とにかくかっこいい。中でもこの伊庭八郎は、小兵衛や鬼平と違って若くて美男子なので、余計に乙女心をそそります。それが、前記２人に勝るとも劣らない清冽な生き方をしている。鎌吉じゃなくても、ずっと付いて行きたい！　と思うでしょう。
あまり、男の美学とか、滅びの美学とか、そういう言葉は好きじゃないのですが、「筋を通す」という伊庭八郎のスタンスは納得が行きます。どっちかというと勤皇党の私は、佐幕派の小説で登場人物に美意識をぶち上げられるとげんなりしてしまうのですが、必ずしも幕府至上主義じゃなく、それでも官軍に迎合できない伊庭の姿は、理屈抜きで素敵だな、と思いました。

イバハチといったら、壮絶なエピソードの多い幕末においてもひときわ麗しく、かつ勇ましかった英雄の一人ですが、そういった面を徒に強調せず、むしろ彼の深い情からくる真摯な生き様を徹底してクローズアップしたところに、この作品の素晴らしさが集約されています。

肺患ゆえに短い余命を悟った八郎が、その事実をひた隠し、限られた時間の中で何ができるかを真剣に考えて己と向き合い、人々と接する様子は、切ない覚悟ながらも潔くて、カッコいい！

特に個人的ツボだったのは、遊撃隊士としての伊庭八郎、というより親友の本山小太郎や鳥八十の鎌吉との関わりあいが、作品中めいっぱいに描かれていたことです。

佐幕派に与して抗戦するといっても、遊撃隊はじめ佐幕諸隊の幹部たちとのあれこれを描くより、やっぱり一番心を寄せられる友だったろう二人との触れ合いが最期まであったから、八郎は望むべくして斃れることができたのだなぁということが、ちゃんと伝わってくるエピソード満載。

ひそかに本山小太郎＆荒井鎌吉ファンな幕末フリークはもちろんのこと、彼らの存在を知らなかった人の心にも響くことは間違いなし！

八郎をとりまく女性たちとの情愛もこまやかに描かれていて、八郎の男ぶりのよさをいっそう際立たせているとともに、女性たちの魅力も豊かに表現されています。

義妹のおつやは芯の強い凛とした女性で、妻にと望んだ義父の想いと死に直面する八郎の決意が交錯して、微妙な関係が保たれていますが、おつやと八郎、それぞれの思い遣りが美しく、精神的な愛情あふれるやりとりが胸を打ちます。

対照的に情愛で満たされたおいらん・小稲との関係はリアルで、池波氏の感性が光る場面が盛り沢山。

強い意志で死に臨みながらも人との深い関わりあいを絶やさなかった伊庭八郎の、人情味に満ちた温もりがぐっと伝わってきて、ただかっこいいだけでない、滲み出る本物の男の優しさと勇気を感じられる作品です。
