本当は開高健の文章が大好きである。一時期週刊誌の人生相談や

軽いエッセイばかり書いていて、単行本を出さないので何となく

遠ざかっていたが、こうしてまった量を読むと、改めて開高氏の

驚くべき博識と練られた文章に脱帽する。

本書にかかれた内容は一言で言えば「森羅万象」。全５０章から

なるエッセイであるが、性の探求から、ブッダ、アウシュビッツ。

>ワイン、日本酒、香水から、ヒトラーやホー・チミン、はては

アミニズムから潮吹き、薄田泣菫まで、ありとあらゆる人間の営み

を軽妙な、しかし徹底的に練り上げた文章でよませる。

特筆すべきは痴的な部分のいくつかの章で、いってみればパーティ

やパブで小話をして、みんなでほくそえむ類のお話ですが、なか

なか懐が深い話が多い。そして読み終わった後で、「君ももっと

沢山本を読まなあかんで。」と言われている気がする、そんな本

である。

　谷沢永一氏の本を通じて開高健の名前は知っていたものの、その作品を手に取るのは今回が初めてです。本書が開高健の作品の中でどういった位置付けに当たるのかすら、私には判然としませんが、とにかく笑わせてもらい、別の作品にも手を伸ばしたくなったのは確かです。私は小説・エッセーに類する文章のレビューは苦手なので、以下、徒然に雑感を羅列します。

　・「第一章―小さな死（P.8）」･･･これを読んで、すぐにこの作品集に引き込まれました。男女の快楽の後、男性はすぐ動き出すのに対し、女性は深い眠りに落ちることを解説しているのですが、「原始時代には男性は外的への防衛体制を取る必要があったのに対して、女性は妊娠するために苗床を放置しておく必要がある」という学説と「男は丸干しじゃけん、女は開きじゃけん、渇きの速さが違うんよ（P.10）」という田舎の漁師の言が並列されているところを取っても諧謔精神に溢れています。

　・「第七章―変態（P.37）」･･･テーマは変態性欲の話ですが、統計学に触れている個所で妙に共感を覚えました。「『統計学』　数量的比較を基礎として、多くの事実を統計的に観察し、処理する方法を研究する学問―と岩波の『広辞苑』にあるが、な〜に、算数のちょっと大がかりなものにすぎない。しばしば数字のお遊びさ（P.41）」とあり、何とも断言しがたい分析結果にあれこれ結論をつけるための補助道具として使われる一面を否定できないと感じた訳です。

　・「第十二章　隣の畑（P.61）」･･･「原料となるブドウの畑がこちらと隣というだけでワインの味が違う」ということを説明する際の例えが秀逸でした。加えて、酒が製造される地域の気候で、その酒を飲むのが最も上手いという指摘にも賛成です。

50章中、どの章を読んでもすんごく面白い。（はずれなし）
ミスター開高は、一貫して、人間の知性と痴性の双方、まるごと人間的であるだよ言っているようだ。
ミスター開高の手によると、釣りも狩りも戦いも美食も感能も、エロでもグロでも、偏見がなくって、いとおかし。
