本作品の後、「幻の翼」「砕かれた鍵」「よみがえる百舌」「のすりの巣」と５作に及ぶ「百舌シリーズ」の第一弾。

新宿の雑踏の中、爆発事件が起こる。被害者はバックを所持していた極左メンバーの筧と、偶然居合わせた公安部倉木警部の妻珠枝。筧を狙っていたテロリスト百舌だが、事件後記憶を失い、雇い主からも追われることになる。自らの記憶を追う百舌、そして、事件の真相を追う倉木・大杉・明星美希、それぞれが交錯し、やがて警察組織の暗部に踏み込むことになる。

数多くの代表作をもつ作者だが、私にとってこの作品に初めてであったときの衝撃は忘れることができない。15年以上たったいまでも、決して色あせることのない、迫真のサスペンスである。

本作品は1986年、週刊文春のベスト10で2位にランキングされたほか、同じく文春の「二十世紀傑作ミステリーベスト10」で11位にランキングされた。

倉木ｖｓ百舌シリーズ？最初の物語です。 この一冊を偶然書店で見つけたのが始まり。最終冊？の‘よみがえる百舌’まで一週間、一気に読破してしまいました。さまざまな事件を通して多くの人物がうごめく様はハードボイルドの一言では片付けられない奥の深さです。春の夜、寝不足覚悟で挑戦してください。
