小学生の時、某・有名なオムニバス恐怖ドラマで映像化されたのを観たのが最初だった。何か漠然とした恐怖を感じ、心の隅からずっと離れない内容だった。
数年が経ち、高校の図書館で　青島幸男氏が訳したこの本を発見。改めて読み直し、この短い物語の中に　あまりにも深いテーマが描かれていることを再確認した。
「２３分間」。決して長くはないこの時間で、劇中の少年少女達は世界の価値観を完全にすり替えられてしまった。しかもその様は、決して力ずくのものではないのだ。これは紛れもなく、「恐怖」である。

この物語を読んで「恐怖」を感じなかった方は、注意が必要かもしれません。彼らが行ったことは、現在でも日常的に、悪意ある人間達が真似して行っているのだから。・・・この女教師のように、笑顔と巧みな話術を武器にして。

おもしろそうな題名と「青島幸男」の訳というとりあわせに何気なく手にしたこの本。読み終えた後は、なんとなく恐ろしくなった。子供に対する思想操作のなんとたやすいことか。教育という名のもとに、権威者の意のままにうごく大人を作り上げることも決して難しくないのかも。
もし今、世界で、日本でこのようなことがあるとしたら・・・。

ちなみに、最後に英文が掲載されているのは良かった。今は幼い子供にも、いつか読めるようになったら読んで欲しい。

本は短いが、感想は尽きない。おそらく第二次大戦下のドイツ軍の侵略下であろう、ある町の小学校に「制服をきた若い女の先生」が新しい教師として赴任してくる。先生は占領下の子供たちが占領軍に対して持つ疑問にひとつひとつ誠実に答え、よい大人になるにはどうすればよいかを子供たちの理論で教えていく。授業が始まって23分後、子供たちは全員「自分の両親はふるいのだ　新しい時代の良い大人になろう」と心から思うようになる。ある国を掌握したければまず幼い世代の教育からはじめよ、とよく聞くが、子供たちの無邪気で純粋な心を掌握していく過程が空恐ろしい。教育で世代を分断する恐ろしさを簡潔にやさしい文章でまとめた本。ぜひ多くの人に読んで欲しい。
