伊達政宗の派遣した遣欧使節団の中に、日本に帰ることをやめ、そのままイスパニアに残ることを決意した男がいた。男の名は斉藤寅吉。イスパニアの武士ともいえるイダルゴの男と意気投合し、ヨーロッパから南米のペルーまで、二人の波乱万丈の冒険が繰り広げられる。

舞台が西洋の時代小説ということで、とっつきにくく思えるかもしれませんが、歴史的背景なども上手に語られていくので、まるで知らないという人でも十分に楽しめます（実際私もまるで知りませんでした、イスパニアのことなんて）。

戦を愛し、恋に悩み、異国にいても大和武士の心意気を忘れない熱い男トラキチの痛快ながらもホロリとさせられる大冒険、読み出したら途中でやめられなくなりますよ。

中世ヨーロッパを舞台にした快作を連発している佐藤賢一が世に出た出世作となった長編。
佐藤作品にしては、珍しく日本人が主人公。江戸期初期の伊達家中のサムライ。冒険を求めるあまり、許婚を捨て、伊達正宗がスペインに派遣した片倉使節団の随員としてスペインに渡る。現地でスペイン人の女といい仲になり、使節団の帰国の際も現地に残る道を選ぶ。

あまり生き方が上手ではない一本気なオトコの生き様。勇敢で強いが、どうも女に弱いし、周りに流される。女を幸せにしてあげたい、と思う割には衝動的に行動を決めて、結局泣かせてしまっている。一方で、日本に置いてきた許婚やスペイン妻のことを思って悶々とする・・・。

やがてヨーロッパでは行き場を失い、南米スペイン植民地に渡る。が、ここでも・・・。
フランスの剣士とサムライの一騎打ちなど、戦闘シーンも迫力。
安寧な生活を望む女を喜ばしてあげたいと思う一方で、冒険を求め一本気に疾走するしかなかったオトコと、待つオンナのすれちがいがなんとも哀しい。

骨太のストーリーの中で、なまめかしい男女の恋愛が展開する部分には本作の後の佐藤作品と同じ雰囲気がある。

奥州侍、斉藤寅吉とイスパニアのイダルゴ、ベニト・レドンデスの数奇な出会い。
共に、戦乱の世に生を受けたかったと望むものの、
元和偃武、イスパニアの斜陽という時代は彼らを欲していなかった。

前時代的な人間になりつつあることを自覚しながらも、
血潮の昂ぶりに任せて行動する。
著者の作品では唯一の日本人が主人公ということもあり、

どうしても思い入れが強くなってしまうし、
なまじ彼の剣術の腕がたつだけに、その悲壮感もひとしおである。

時代が大きく変わる時というのは、このような人達が多くなるのかもしれない。
