本屋で何気なく目にとまって手に取り、あらすじを読んでみて、興味を持ちました。
「死を目前にした人の願いを叶える」美談かと思って読み始めたら、良い意味で期待を裏切られました。ただの美談だったらつまらなかったと思います。
人間の醜さ・哀しさが描かれていて、しかし淡々としていて暗くなりすぎず。
主人公と幼なじみの関係・やりとりが何だか素敵です。
私は本多さんの小説を初めて読みましたが、文章がまわりくどくなくてよいですね。

本書が私にとって初めての本多さんの著書でした。

帯書きに惹かれて購入。
四話のショートストーリーで構成されているのも、
あきっぽい私には重要です。

あまり感情的でない、シンプルでテンポのよい文章。
何より会話文の、主人公の小気味よい切り返しが最高です。

一日で一気に読破。
病院でバイトをする傍ら、
死を目前にした患者の最後の願いを叶えていく「僕」。

『FIREFLY』が私の一番のお気に入り。
病院の電話から、留守電にメッセージを残し続ける女性。
意外な結末に、彼女の心情を思うとせつなさが沁みてきました。

「人間の本質」
テーマは重いのに、重さを感じさせない。
しかし、自分の中に残るものがあります。

そして、知らず知らずのうちに自分に問いかけているのです。
「あなたの最後の願いは何ですか？」

私は短編とかはあまり好きではないのですが、これは良かったです！シンンプルに描かれているので、活字が苦手な人でも読みやすいからお勧めできます。人は最後に何を願うのか？ちょっと気になる題材だし、いずれ自分にもそんな時が来るのだから、世界に引き込まれてしまいますね。
一番好きなのは三つ目の話かな？女性が誰に電話しているのかはすぐに分かっちゃいましたけど、綺麗で切ない終わり方にじーんときちゃいました。それに、主人公と幼馴染の関係も良いですね！
