私が読んだ２００５年の春に時点では、厳しいレビューが多かったのだが、
星の評価も４を取っているし、ずいぶんかわったなあと思う。
この作品後もスポーツドクターなどを出し、期待にそぐわぬ活躍を見せてくれている。
本作品は、競馬以外のところでは、確かに盛り込みすぎて、深みがないかもしれないけど、
面白く読めた。

競馬好きからみたらもどかしく、競馬に興味がなければとっつきづらいという欠点があるかもしれない。でもがけっぷちジョッキーが目の前の幸運の女神をつかめるかどうかという話は割と普遍的で、青春小説として読んだらふつうに楽しめるのでは？様々な展開にはきっちり伏線張ってあるし、「軽い」印象に物足りなさはあるかもしれないけれども、出来はしっかりしていると思うよ。明るい青春小説の佳作。私も擁護に回る。

新聞の記事で知った書籍でしたが、すぐに購入し読んでみました。トレセンのワンシーンから物語が始まりますが、スムーズに流れに引き込まれていきます。冴えない騎手の物語ですが、現実の騎手に置き換えてみると、中々奥が深いように感じられました。丁寧な文章に巧みな表現力が加わり、明快なテンポで物語りは進み飽きることなく最後まで一気に読むことができました。感動とか感銘とかは求めない方がいいと思いますが、競馬が好きな方には娯楽小説として最後まで楽しく読めると思います。
