いつもきまった作家の作品ばかり手にとってしまう。たまには新しい作家にも目を向けないとと思い、大好きな山本周五郎賞を受賞した作品ということで、手に取った。

同賞を受賞した作品のすべてを読んだわけではないが、
久々に読み応えある作品にめぐり合えた、という満足感がのこる。

ストーリー展開やモチーフの面白さはもちろん秀逸。
しかし、それだけにとどまらない、あくまでも人間に焦点をあてた物語展開、どんどん主人公の生き方にひきこまれていく。山本賞にふさわしい作品だと心から納得。

一人の得がたい作家が誕生した。解説で池上冬樹氏がこの魅力的な短編群が生まれた経緯をるる述べているが、今回は氏の説に全面的に賛成する。熊谷達也はこの短編群でひと皮剥けたのだ。

熊谷達也のデビュー作｢ウエンカムイの爪｣は、フレッシュな面もあったが、中盤のたるみ等、まだまだという感じがあった。しかしこれは違った。描写の緻密さ、浮き上がる人物像、「失われた、自然と人間との関係・闘い」というテーマの普遍性、唸る事しばしば。たった四年ほどで作家というものはこれほどまでに成長するのだ、と嫉妬さえ覚えた。

特に私は『潜りさま』『メリィ』『川崎船』がお気に入り。

自然の圧倒的な強さを感じると同時に
それに対する人間の脆さを感じる作品集．

しかし，読んでいくにつれ，
自然にはかなわないと悟りつつ畏怖や葛藤を抱えながら，
それでもなお自然と懸命に対峙する人間の強さをヒシヒシと感じました．
非常に切迫した場面描写が多いため，
やや心臓の弱めな自分はドキドキし過ぎて
何度も本を閉じようと思ってしまいました．

決して幸福な終わり方のものばかりではないのですが，
主人公達はその運命を受け入れていくため，
読後感はさわやかだと思いました．

現実では失われつつある真の人間の強さ
見出す事が出来る作品だと思いました．
