「石の目」「はじめ」「BLUE」「平面いぬ。」という長めの４作品を収録し
たホラー短編集。
普通、（連作でない）短編集というと、一つや二つ、締め切りに追われて、
作者としてはベストな出来でない作品があっても不思議ではないのだが、
この作品集の４作品はどれも完成度が高い。
表題作の「石の目」は、和風メドゥーサ伝説みたいなお話で、本格ミステ
リーの面白さが、ホラーの怖さとを相殺することなく共存させている離れ
業に、いたく感心した。
「はじめ」は、幻覚だったはずの女の子「はじめ」が、何故か一人歩きし
始めるお話。前半の噂が広がる展開はありがちな話だが、後半「はじめ」
が実在し始めてからの展開が面白い。軽いタッチのストーリー運びで、
ラストも幻覚にふさわしく、ほのぼのいい感じ。
「BLUE」は、意志を持って生まれてしまったぬいぐるみたちの物語。純粋
な心を持った主人公に、意地悪と不幸の連続と、なかなかけれん味たっぷ
りのストーリーなのだが、ラストシーンには、作者の思惑通り、やっぱり
泣かされてしまった。
「平面いぬ。」は、
家族から浮いた存在の女の子が、何気なく犬の刺青を入れたら、何故か皮
膚の上を動くようになってしまう。そんなとき、主人公を突然襲う家族の
不幸。刺青の犬に家族の愛情を教えられ・・・ラストは、大変な状況なの
に、主人公の心はほのぼの明るい。
　作者が二十歳前後に書いた作品を集めたものだそうだが、凄い作家だ。
いずれも、怖さと悲しさのバランス、リアリティとシュールさのバランス
が絶妙で、とてもいい味を出している。

乙一さん独特の世界です。この独特の世界が好きな人はすごく好きな小説だと思います。ホラーやサスペンスをより強く求める人には物足りないかも・・。東圭吾さんが書く、もっと現実的な小説も好きだけれど、乙一さんの現実と空想の中間のような不思議な世界に、つい引き寄せられます。いつも頭の片隅から離れない小説家って、すごいですよね。

ほんとに一気にひきこまれてゆく世界観でした。
石ノ目はホラー要素が強い作品でしたが読んだあとに
怖さと少し切なさの残る作品でした。
BLUEは悲しい話ですがぬいぐるみの気持ちがわかる感動作
でした。表題作の平面いぬも不思議な話で主人公の気持ちが
伝わってくる話です。私が一番すきだったのは「はじめ」です。
同世代というのもありますが空想上の少女と主人公、主人公の友人
の３人の空気感が楽しく、最後には切なさを感じました。どの作品も
全く違う話なのに最後には切なさが残るのがいいな、と思います。
